We are seeking an experienced Operations Watch Officer to support the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Continuity and emergency operations mission. This role provides real-time situational awareness, crisis coordination, and continuity support to ensure the Department can respond to and recover from unexpected events. The ideal candidate has a strong background in emergency management, COOP, crisis operations, military or federal operations centers, and structured reporting under pressure.This is a non-technical operations role focused on continuity, incident awareness, alerts/notifications, operational reporting, and coordination through established chains of command.Key ResponsibilitiesServe as the night-shift Operations Watch Officer supporting a 24/7/365 operations center.Maintain situational awareness across natural hazards, national security issues, and human-caused and technological events.Communicate urgent information to leadership to support timely emergency management responses.Prepare operational reports, alerts, notifications, and situational summaries in accordance with established SOPs.Issue alert and notification messages using the Commerce Emergency Notification System (Everbridge).Monitor and respond to communications received through designated watch officer channels.Compile, analyze, and elevate significant event information impacting personnel, missions, or infrastructure.Produce written updates, operational summaries, and oral briefs for senior leadership.Conduct periodic operational checks of communications and reporting systems.Assist in drafting, reviewing, and implementing updates to policies, procedures, and SOPs.Deploy as needed to a Commerce continuity facility within a two-hour drive.Required QualificationsActive TS/SCI security clearance (required for access to SCIF and classified communications).Experience in continuity operations, COOP, emergency management, crisis response, or watch operations.Background working in military, federal, IC, or emergency operations centers.Ability to remain calm, decisive, and structured during high-tempo or high-pressure situations.Strong written and verbal communication skills; experience preparing briefs and operational reports.Proven ability to follow SOPs, escalate issues appropriately, and maintain accurate logs and documentation.Familiarity with chains of command and interagency coordination.Ability to work night shifts and adapt to rotating or extended schedules.Preferred ExperienceMilitary service or federal operations center experience (any branch or IC organization).Experience with continuity planning or COOP programs.Experience issuing alerts/notifications in an emergency management environment.Experience coordinating with federal, state, local, or private-sector partners.Work Environment & RequirementsWork performed onsite in an office environment and within a SCIF.May be required to deploy to a continuity site within 2 hours of Commerce HQ.Free parking is available for the overnight shift.Powered by JazzHRfLxTqay7RW
