Position Title Lab Aide/Phlebotomist - Evenings 1430-2300 Olathe Hospital Position Summary / Career Interest: Responsible for direct patient care for the Laboratory, obtaining blood specimens from hospital inpatients, outpatients, Emergency Care and Day Surgery. In addition to basic specimen collection, the Lab Aid's primary role is to receive, inspect and process all samples for laboratory testing. The responsibilities are also to perform basic testing and analyzer operations throughout the clinical laboratory. Proficient in the use of Cerner Laboratory Information System. The Lab Aid will be trained to specific clinical processes and procedures to be performed within and out of the lab. Responsibilities and Essential Job Functions Understands importance of specimen integrity and is able to investigate and ensure integrity throughout the pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical process. Able to investigate specimen requirements such as proper identification, sample type, sample volume, and unacceptability due to hemolysis, lipemia, clotting, etc. Properly seals, stores, transports, and documents all samples. Works independently, organizing to maximize department efficiency. Completes testing within the laboratory TAT expectations. Takes appropriate action when necessary. Uses resources effectively, including using Certified Medical Technologists as knowledgable subject matter experts when questions or problems arise. Performs and verifies moderately complex laboratory testing, including result reporting in the LIS. Appropriate documentation in the LIS required. Moderately complex testing may include all automated testing such as automated chemistry instruments, automated cell counters, and automated coag instruments Dispense blood products to nursing personnel or couriers, ensuring proper requests, identifying correct product, performing positive patient identificaion, and dispensing product in the LIS system. Prepare Microbiology culture samples and gram stains. Perform and verify waived testing within the laboratory. Understands Cerner functions required to work accurately and efficiently in the C.R.A. (Collection List, Specimen Log In, Order Result Viewer, Container Inquiry, Department Order Entry, Requition Order Entry, ABN, Modify Collections, Request A Chart, Manual Expedite) Assists in the training of new employees, students, radiology tech, ECC techs. Performs instrument start-up, maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting as required with proper documentation. Performs, evaluates, and documents all required Quality Control. Takes appropriate corrective actiion. Efficiently and accurately monitors Specimen Collection Inquiry performing add test orders, canceling, crediting duplicate test, logging in specimens or when patient need drawn. Delivers specimens to proper departments, centrifuges specimens, promptly answerers tube system, orders out/nursing home/reference patient labs, answers telephones/communicates well in assisting callers with laboratory questions and problems solves. Answers phone promptly and courteously. Answers pneumatic tube system promptly. Gives accurate and complete hand-off communication to the next shift. Order supplies for send out testing Consistently meets work schedule. Must be able to perform the professional, clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department.
