What are the responsibilities and job description for the Laura’s House Advocate (Resident Advocate) position at Omaha Tribe of Nebraska?

Resident Advocate will be required to assist in Domestic Violence victims including their children getting settled in a shelter environment. Resident Advocate will also provide services to the victim such as developing a safety plan, coordination and transport for basic services including crisis intervention, court accompaniment, advocacy, transportation, sheltering, safety planning, and counseling. Advocate will provide direct and indirect services to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and dating violence and work as part of a team with Family Violence Protection & Safety Program and Tribal Domestic Violence Programs. Provide assistance to the Project Coordinator and On-Call Advocate in project coordination including, but not limited to, planning development, coordination of meeting times, agendas, minutes, data development, partnering of community/State/Tribal programs, agencies and schools, working with project consultants. The Advocate will implement all aspects of community-based services and a systemic approach through collaboration and coordination in meeting the needs of victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES and/or RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

  • Laura's shelter employee supervises the daily operations of a residential home by residing families. This includes physical tasks such as cleaning, laundering and changing linens, sorting donations and upkeep of the residence. It also includes providing support and short-term counseling, helping clients set goals, providing transportation and case management.
  • Primary duties include direct services at "Laura's House (DV shelter); maintain confidentiality of services for the victim and safety in the shelter including advocacy and accompaniment. Must be available 24 hours a day/ 7 days a week, willing to be on call, after hours, holidays and weekends.
  • Provide specific transitional housing support services for victims of DV/SA, when the clients enter the shelter (Laura's House); which may include emergency placements at another shelter and/or transportation to motels, prepare and deliver emergency kits, moving preparations, and purchasing necessities.
  • Develop safety plans and goals with the clients who reside at Laura's House (DV Shelter).
  • The Advocate will maintain records and data on a computer soft-ware system for the purpose of reporting and building a statistical data base/management information system.
  • (Record the days residing in the shelter and hours and minutes with each client).
  • Assist the Coordinator and/or On-Call Advocate in providing group and individual community education services primary to educating youth and parents on domestic violence, sexual assault and other related topics.
  • Assist and educate the residents in maintaining a clean and neat environment during their stay in the shelter. Including issuing the shelter handbook and going over the information, preparation of meals, laundry, schedules, and appointments.
  • Must be willing to stay in the residence (Laura's House) but not mandatory.
  • Other duties assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree (GED)
  • Have a minimum of two years' experience in working in domestic violence or have experience in a related field.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, and/or REGISTRATIONS:

  • Must have a valid Nebraska Driver's license and be insurable.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug test and background check

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Heavy lifting may be required.

WORK CONDITIONS:

  • Some travel may be required.
  • Advocate will be available to be on call evenings, weekends and holidays.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and/or ABILITIES:

  • Possess an understanding of Omaha culture, tribal systems, and tribal referral process.
  • Possess quality computer skills and be able to work with a budget.
  • Possess strong public speaking skills, able to provide community lectures and education on topics such as domestic violence, strengthening families, sexual assault and stalking.

PLEASE NOTE: P.L. 93-638, Indian Preference and Tribal Employment rights Ordinance. (T.E.R.O) will be practiced; however, all qualified applicants will be considered.

Must pass background check and pre-employment drug screen.
