Job Title: Animal Care Assistant - Hoofstock
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Classification: Seasonal
Hours: 7:30 AM - 4:30 PM (40 hours/week from early-May through mid-August; 584 total hours available)
Pay Rate: $15.40/hour
This is a seasonal position with a maximum duration of six months, based on individual performance and business operations. The exact end date will be determined by the official start date.
Summary:
We are seeking an energetic individual to assist our full-time staff in taking care of our Hoofstock and Rhino collection. This role will help you develop your animal keeping skills as well as your time management skills. Hoofstock animals include Giraffe, Okapi, Yellow Back Duikers, Plains Zebra, Eastern Bongo, Impala, Cheetahs, White Rhino, Indian Rhino, Takin, Tufted Deer, and Pere David Deer. This position reports to the Hoofstock Supervisor.
Duties and Responsibilities (include but not limited to):
- Assist the keepers in cleaning and maintaining the barns, exhibits, keeper areas, and diet prep areas.
- Help with yard maintenance including mowing and weed eating.
- Assist in feeding the animals in the Hoofstock department.
- Cut and process browse.
- Administer medication as needed.
- Help with behind-the-scenes tours and engaging guests.
- Complete training and enrichment logs daily.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Must be at least 18 year old.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Computer skills for data entry.
- Good communication skills required.
- Ability to work independently and in a team-setting.
- Comfortable engaging with guests.
Candidates might be required to pass a pre-employment background check, drug test, negative TB test, and possess a valid drivers license with a good history.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort:
- Will sometimes work extended/odd hours including weekends, holidays and some night programs.
- Position will be outside most of the day.
- Must be able to walk long distances across the zoo.
- Must be able to stand, sit, kneel, bend, twist, reach above head and climb.
- Will lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 75 pounds and occasionally up to 90 pounds using safe and proper lifting methods. Will require to dump barrels.
