Job Description/General Function
The Lifeguard Coordinator supports daily pool operations, leads the lifeguard team, and ensures a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for all.
Responsibilities
- Create and manage lifeguard schedules.
- Monitor guard performance and enforce safety policies.
- Provide leadership, coaching, and moral support to the lifeguard team.
- Serve as the person in charge when supervisor is unavailable.
- Handle customer concerns and resolve issues.
- Help organize and lead lifeguard certification courses, in-service trainings, and emergency drills.
- Manage aquatics and first aid inventory; complete monthly safety inspections.
- Maintain up-to-date records of lifeguard certifications.
- Cover lifeguard shifts as needed.
- Assist with special events and pool programming.
- Ensure pool cleanliness and inspect equipment regularly.
- Log incident reports and maintain facility safety records.
- Assist in recruiting, hiring, and onboarding new lifeguards and swim instructors.
- Accurately submit records and incident reports as required
- Ensure that guards have the proper tools they need to do their job.
- Enforce all aquatic policies and procedures, ensuring that safety procedures are always followed. Responsible for making sure all lifeguards work in alignment with health codes, safety guidelines, and YMCA USA best practices.
- Lead monthly in-services and other training such as lifeguard classes, re-certs, and medical training.
- Assist with staff check-ins at 30, 90, and annually.
- Partner with the maintenance team to monitor pool chemical levels
- Be prepared to attend training to gain additional certifications/knowledge as determined by YMCA team leaders.
- Attend and fully participate in leadership meetings, association meetings, and other required gatherings as needed
- Attend trainings as required and complete all required online trainings which include child abuse prevention training within 7 days of hire, and complete annual renewal training in a timely manner.
Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting, and risk management. Adhere to policies related to boundaries with youth
Qualifications:Required Skills and Experience
- Previous lifeguard experience and current lifeguard certification required; YMCA lifeguard experience preferred
- Current Basic Life Support, First Aid, and Emergency Us of Medical Oxygen certifications
- Ability to respond safely to emergency situations
- Ability to relate well and communicate effectively with a diverse group of individuals, in all circumstances
- Pass a comprehensive background screening
- Be 18 years of age or older.
Additional Expectations and Duties
- Reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations in accordance with mandated reporting requirements
- Responsible for general housekeeping tasks and general pool maintenance to ensure the workspace is always clean and safe

- Submits hours worked accurately on the electronic timecard, within timelines for supervisor approval

- Flexible schedule needed as on occasion may need to work mornings, evenings and/or weekends

- Physical ability to perform all skills required of a lifeguard, and have the mobility to properly use aquatic equipment to rescue a 200lb person
