What are the responsibilities and job description for the Paraeducator - Behavior Technician position at Olympia School District?
Purpose: The job of “Paraeducator - Behavior Technician” works as a team member with teachers, counselors, school social workers and other appropriate personnel to establish positive student contacts that develop appropriate and positive behavior modifications enabling students to succeed. He/she will assist instructional personnel by participating as a team member in the development and monitoring of comprehensive behavioral objectives, goals and plans, including a Behavior Support Plan (BSP) and/or a Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP).

- Copy of Para Pro Assessment Test results or official college transcripts
Position to begin employment in the 2026-27 school year.
This 6 hpd position is Monday - Friday 180 days per year (plus 10 paid holidays).

Essential Functions:
- Works one-on-one with students to affect behavior changes
- Implements behavioral programs designed to make positive and appropriate changes
- Assesses crisis situations and defuses situations using conflict resolution and crisis management techniques
- Reinforces appropriate behaviors and redirects negative behaviors
- Provides values clarification including rules, expectations and consequences. Implements consequences for inappropriate behavior
- With proper training, physically restrains students if necessary for safety
Communications/Consultation:
- Ensures consistency of behavioral standards by coordinating with appropriate student contacts, monitors physical and emotional changes in students and reports to appropriate personnel
- Consults with teacher, support staff, and administrators to obtain information and advice on prior behavior problems, and provides information as necessary concerning behavioral concerns
Program/Staff Support:
- Maintains a professional rapport with program/site staff
- Assists the school site team by monitoring student behavior changes, assisting with academics, and supervising various activities during the course of the instructional day to maintain a controlled and safe environment for students and staff.
- Attends IEP (Individualized Education Plan) and student progress meetings as requested
- Implements school’s emergency procedures as requested
- Attends trainings regarding safety, security, physical restraints and behavior management procedures as requested
- Implements peer counseling groups, social skills instruction, and other learning opportunities as requested while supervised by certificated staff
- Attends and participates in program/site team meetings
- Maintains and assist in data analysis as determined by school teachers (SWIS, Excel)
Job Requirements - Qualifications:
- Education Required:
o Have received a passing grade on the Educations Testing Service’s Paraeducator Assessment; or
o Hold an Associate of Arts degree; or
o Have earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at an institution of higher education: or
o Have completed a registered apprenticeship program.
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance.
- Experience: Prior job related experience with school age children who qualify for special education or at-risk stuents.
- Participate in all OSD required health related trainings. First Aid and CPR training may be required.
- Willingness to participate in appropriate training to gain necessary skills to perform this position, e.g. Type II License, Food Handlers Permit.
- Right Response Certification or willingness to obtain and maintain.
