Our NJ facility specializes in custom UL 508A control panels, ranging from motor-control panels for industrial, medical, and laboratory vacuum systems to utility-scale solar products, including SCADA cabinets, networking panels, meteorological stations, fiber-optic patch panels, AC panelboards, and more.
Our CO facility specializes in high-volume production of UL 1741 solar products for the utility-scale solar industry, such as DC combiner boxes, load-break disconnect boxes (LBDs), transition/splice boxes, and more.
The Role: We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Controls Engineer, or an Electrical Engineer with relevant controls experience, to join our team in Hillsborough, NJ. While controls experience is strongly preferred, we may also consider an Electrical Engineer who demonstrates strong technical aptitude, resourcefulness, and an interest in developing a career in industrial controls.
The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, programming, and testing custom UL 508A control panels, with occasional support for the design of UL 1741 and UL 508A solar products. This is a full-time, in-office position with some travel required.
Responsibilities:
- Coordinate with customers to understand their control panel requirements.
- Prepare quotations based on estimated engineering time and material costs.
- Perform load calculations to size and select power components.
- Perform thermal calculations to size and select cooling components.
- Size and select various other components, using manufacturer data sheets.
- Contact manufacturers’ technical support as needed.
- Generate a complete bill of materials (BOM) for the purchasing team.
- Generate electrical schematics and panel layouts primarily using standard AutoCAD.
- Program PLCs and HMIs using platforms such as Allen-Bradley, Delta, Mitsubishi, AutomationDirect, and others.
- Select and configure VFDs based on the application requirements.
- Coordinate with the in-house fabrication team on layout and wiring requirements.
- Perform factory acceptance testing (FAT), including testing and debugging panel programming.
- Provide customer support as needed.
- Travel for on-site control panel startup as needed.
- Provide engineering support to other departments as needed.
Qualifications:
- 10 years of controls engineering experience is strongly preferred.
- Candidates with a degree in electrical engineering and less than 10 years of controls experience will also be considered.
- Exceptional candidates with an electrical engineering degree and no controls experience may be considered based on technical aptitude, resourcefulness, and a genuine interest in learning industrial controls.
- Effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Resourceful and self-motivated.
- Ability to proactively research and find solutions without direct supervision.
- Ability to learn new programming and configuration software for PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and other control components.
- Ability to learn and apply industrial control concepts such as PID control loops, equipment sequencing and interlocks, alarm logic, analog signal scaling, and industrial communications.
- Proficient with Windows-based PCs and Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and related software.
- Fully proficient in AutoCAD. Familiarity with AutoCAD Electrical toolset is a plus.
- Familiarity with UL 508A and the National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) is a plus.
- Available for domestic travel, sometimes on short notice and for multiple nights.
- Physically able to navigate large customer sites, involving extensive walking and standing.
