What are the responsibilities and job description for the Operator - Highway position at Olmsted County?
OR
A combination of education and experience equivalent to three (3) years of experience in a similar position as listed in the work functions.
Regular and reliable attendance is a necessary component of job/position. Individuals required to use County vehicles and equipment must have a valid driver's license and be free of any major traffic violations for the last three (3) years.
Required Special Qualifications:
Possession of a valid Minnesota Class “B” driver’s license is required upon employment.
AND
Possession of a valid Minnesota Class “A” driver’s license with tanker endorsement is required within 12 months of employment.
Note:
Individuals will be required to complete a pre-employment drug test per the Omnibus Transportation Testing Act of 1991 and will be subject to subsequent testing as required per the regulation.
- Operates medium or heavy equipment such as tandem trucks, motor graders, self-propelled rubber-tired roller, steel wheel roller, dozer, skid steer, hydraulic excavator, etc., to plow and sand roads, reconstruct roads, haul rock, seal coat, etc.
- Performs other routine maintenance duties such as putting up fences, spraying weeds with chemicals, cleaning ditches, shoveling and use of power tools for road and bridge maintenance work, building maintenance, repairs, and janitorial duties
- Operates equipment to mow ditches, cut brush, etc.
- Performs preventive equipment maintenance such as changing oil, lubricating, etc., to keep equipment in good working condition.
- Completes other activities as assigned.
- Knowledge of the operating characteristics of assigned equipment.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned equipment and operations.
- Knowledge of applicable traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in the operations of assigned equipment.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of equipment operation.
- Knowledge of routine traffic control operations.
- Skill in the use and operation of assigned equipment.
- Skill in the use of computers and technology.
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to make minor operating adjustments and to recognize operating deficiencies in assigned equipment.

- Ability to identify roadway maintenance issues and report them according to established procedures.
