What are the responsibilities and job description for the Weekend Museum Custodian position at Old Sturbridge Village?
Old Sturbridge Village is seeking a reliable and detail‑oriented Custodian to help maintain clean, safe, and welcoming facilities across our large, historic campus. This position plays a key role in ensuring a positive experience for all guests, staff, and volunteers.
What You’ll Do
- Perform routine cleaning: sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and trash removal
- Clean and sanitize restrooms, offices, break rooms, and public areas
- Complete floor care tasks including buffing, stripping, waxing, and operating floor‑care equipment
- Conduct deep cleaning and industrial cleaning following safety procedures
- Replenish and organize cleaning supplies; ensure proper chemical storage
- Assist with minor facility maintenance and report any issues or safety concerns
- Set up and break down rooms or event spaces as needed
- Promote a workplace that supports diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility
Essential Physical Requirements
Candidates must be able to perform the following essential functions, with or without reasonable accommodation:
- Stand for long periods
- Walk long distances across a large campus with uneven terrain
- Work outdoors and travel between buildings in all weather conditions
- Regularly lift up to 30 lbs and occasionally up to 50 lbs
- Bend, stoop, kneel, crouch/squat, reach, grasp, push, and pull as part of daily duties
- Perform repetitive motions related to custodial tasks
- Work early mornings (5:30 a.m.) and weekends as scheduled
Preferred Experience
- Custodial or facilities maintenance experience
- Familiarity with commercial cleaning equipment and chemicals
- Experience with painting or porter services (a plus)
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong communication skills and a dependable work ethic

Pay: $15.00–$16.50 per hour
Job Type: Part-time (8-20)
Schedule: Early morning (5:30 a.m. start) Saturdays and Sundays; can be additional weekdays as well if more hours are desired
