Position Overview:
We are seeking a skilled Senior Underwriter to join our Inland Marine team and take ownership of a growing book of business. This role focuses on underwriting and managing risks across key Inland Marine lines, including Contractors Block (Property Package), Contractors Equipment, Installation Floaters, and related coverages. The ideal candidate brings strong market knowledge, broker relationships, and the ability to evaluate complex risks with sound judgment. This position offers the opportunity to work in a collaborative environment with direct access to leadership, a streamlined decision-making process, and national underwriting reach.
Essential Job Functions:
- Build a profitable and diverse book of Inland Marine business with assigned brokers throughout the country. Develop creative program structures to stay ahead of the competition.
- Manage workloads and authority for desirable risk evaluations.
- Serve as the technical underwriting expert and primary resource for underwriting questions.
- Ability to place and negotiate reinsurance needs on an individual risk basis in coordination with the Vice President.
- Work independently within delegated authority and discuss risks with referrals as required.
- Understand, interpret, and consider catastrophe modeling results as part of the decision-making process and aggregate management.
- Drive a culture that promotes collaborative and teamwork-oriented environment.
- Generate and assist with the implementation of ideas for continuous operational improvement.
- Create and build relationships with Inland Marine specialist brokers across the country.
- Occasional travel is required as necessary.
Qualifications:
- 4 years of Inland Marine underwriting experience. Strong shared and layered placement experience a plus.
- Strong Wholesale and Retail Broker relationships
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- Ability to analyze risk across a broad spectrum of Inland Marine classes of business.
- Strong problem-solving, reasoning and decision-making skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Understanding of Inland Marine rating methodology and cat modeling tools.
Physical Demands:
The employee is regularly required to sit at a desk for prolonged periods and work on a computer; occasionally required to reach with hands and arms; frequently required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. This is a direct support role; working from home is not permitted. Ability to travel as needed.
