Position Description:
Old Dominion Mechanical, LLC is seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Estimator to support the planning and execution of commercial mechanical construction projects. The Estimator will be responsible for evaluating project specifications and drawings, preparing comprehensive cost estimates, and supporting bid proposals for HVAC, plumbing, and sheet metal scopes of work. This role requires a solid understanding of mechanical systems, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively across departments to ensure accurate and competitive proposals.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Review construction drawings, specifications, and RFPs to determine project scope and requirements
- Perform material take-offs and labor calculations for HVAC, plumbing, and sheet metal systems
- Solicit and evaluate vendor and subcontractor quotes for pricing accuracy and completeness
- Prepare detailed and accurate cost estimates, bid proposals, and scopes of work
- Participate in pre-bid meetings, job site walkthroughs, and post-bid evaluations
- Coordinate with project managers, engineers, and sales teams to validate estimates and support project planning
- Maintain estimating database, cost history, and pricing documentation
- Assist with value engineering and alternate pricing strategies as requested
- Identify risk items and ensure clarity in inclusions/exclusions
Additional Responsibilities:
- Support budgeting and change order pricing for active projects
- Assist in creating schedules and phasing plans for bid proposals
- Collaborate with business development to pursue new opportunities
- Stay current on industry pricing trends, labor rates, and material availability
Educational Qualifications Preferred:
Category: High School Diploma / GED (Required); Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree (Preferred)
Field Specialization: Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, HVAC Technology, or related field
Degree: Preferred but not required with relevant experience
Required Training/s:
- Estimating software (e.g., FastPIPE, Trimble, QuoteSoft, Bluebeam)
- Blueprint reading and mechanical systems fundamentals
- Construction cost control and budgeting
Required Work Experience:
Industry: Commercial HVAC, Plumbing, and Mechanical Construction
Role: Estimator or Assistant Estimator
Years of Experience: 3–5 years preferred in mechanical estimating or relevant construction experience
Required Knowledge:
- HVAC, plumbing, and mechanical systems
- Extensive knowledge of sheet metal installation (preferred)
- Local mechanical codes and installation methods
- Construction sequencing and trade coordination
- Labor rates, material costs, and productivity factors
Required Skills:
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting construction drawings
- Skilled in Microsoft Excel, Word, and estimating software
- Strong written and verbal communication
- Ability to prepare clear and accurate bid packages
- Problem-solving and adaptability in a fast-paced environment
