Incorporated in 1948, Old Dominion Electric Cooperative (ODEC) provides reliable, cost-effective, environmentally balanced, wholesale electric services to our 11-member distribution cooperatives in Virginia, Maryland and Delaware. Our core business is generating, purchasing and delivering electricity to our members. Purpose of Job:
Located in ODEC’s Glen Allen, Virginia office, the Payroll Accountant will be the lead accountant for ODEC’s bi-weekly payroll. Responsible for ensuring accurate and timely processing of payroll, reconciling payroll accounts, and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. Serves as a key liaison between Human Resources, Accounting, and employees regarding payroll related matters. Manages the preparation and reconciliation of financial information for Regional Headquarters, Inc (RHI) and TEC Trading. Leads the annual year-end review of RHI. Assists with the Sarbanes Oxley annual process narrative updates.
Essential responsibilities include:
- Lead accountant for ODEC’s bi-weekly nonexempt & exempt payroll. Prepares and processes payroll including the proper identification and classification of other compensation components. Reviews quarterly tax filings prepared by UltiPro. Reviews W-2’s and resolves any differences.
- Responsible for the preparation of the monthly journal entries & reconciliations for ODEC related to payroll & benefits.
- Manages the preparation and recording of monthly entries in general ledger and fixed asset ledger for RHI & TEC Trading. Prepares monthly financial reports for RHI and TEC Trading.
- Reviews and analyzes accounts receivable and accounts payable for RHI & TEC Trading
- Assists Manager of General Accounting with Sarbanes-Oxley annual process narrative updates.
- Responsible for the preparation and presentation of the annual operating budget for RHI and once approved enters the budget into JDE. Manages the annual year-end review of RHI, including preparing required schedules and providing assistance to the auditors.
- Prepares year-end schedules required for the ODEC annual audits. Assists in the preparation of the annual budget for ODEC.
- Prepare Purchased Power & Gas invoices for wire payments to be entered into JDE.
- Completes payroll related 10K workpapers and FERC schedules.
Work Experience:
- Minimum 5 years’ general accounting experience required
- Minimum 3 years’ payroll processing experience strongly preferred
Critical Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Intermediate level proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
- Analytical, detail-oriented and problem solving skills
- Variance analysis reporting and interpretation
- Basic proficiency in payroll, accounting, and budget software packages
Preferred Knowledge and Skills:
- Accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets and financial closing processes experience preferred
- JD Edwards and Hyperion software proficiency preferred
- GAAP and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance knowledge and experience preferred
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related major required

Working Conditions and Physical Demands: Ability to use a keyboard and monitor the majority of the day, interact effectively with others through verbal communication, video, email and text, work full days (8 hours) in an office environment.
Compensation range: $92,274/yearly to $102,527/yearly
