Position Summary
The Adoption and Animal Care Lead plays a vital role in managing daily animal care operations and facilitating successful adoption processes. This position is responsible for guiding and training team members while maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for shelter animals, staff, volunteers, and visitors. The ideal candidate is dependable, compassionate, organized, and thrives in a fast-paced shelter setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership & Team Support: Lead, train, and mentor direct reports and shelter staff to maintain high standards of operational efficiency and animal care.
- Customer Service & Front Office: Manage reception and front desk operations, answer public inquiries regarding shelter services, and provide exceptional customer service to adopters, volunteers, and visitors.
- Marketing & Promotions: Assist the Shelter Operations Manager with promoting adoptable animals through photos, videos, adoption spotlights, and social media content creation.
- Facility & Operational Oversight: Ensure the shelter remains safe, clean, and organized, performing general administrative or operational tasks assigned by the Executive Director.
- Animal Care & Welfare: Lead a team of pet care specialists, clean and sanitize dog and cat kennels, maintain animal health protocols, monitor overall animal well-being, and promptly communicate medical or behavioral concerns to leadership.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Shelter Leadership: Previous experience leading or supervising a team in an animal shelter setting (Required).
- Customer Service: Strong written and verbal communication skills with a customer-focused approach.
- Animal Handling: Comfortable working directly with dogs and cats in a shelter environment.
- Technical & General Skills: Basic computer literacy, typing skills, and the ability to work independently or collaboratively.
- Preferred Traits: Deep commitment to animal welfare, strong organizational and multitasking abilities, and a calm, professional demeanor in busy situations.
Physical Demands
- Ability to stand and walk for the majority of the workday.
- Ability to squat, bend, kneel, twist, pivot, and crouch regularly.
- Sufficient hand dexterity for typing and routine operational tasks.
- Ability to occasionally lift and carry up to 60 pounds.
