  • General: Provides effective leadership, management, training, and discipline for a shift of police officers and performs related administrative duties. 2. General: Protects lives and property through the utilization of modern law enforcement techniques and procedures to better provide a safe and orderly educational environment. 3. General: Crime Prevention/Safety Enhancement - Engaged in a proactive, rather than reactive, mode of public safety responsibilities in an effort to prevent crimes or hazardous activities from being committed and to reduce the risks of accidents on campus by monitoring potential problems. 4. General: Public Service/Public Relations - Provides a public service by assisting faculty, staff, students, and visitors in their multitude of daily activities on the university campus. 5. General: Maintains Educational Environment - Provides a regulatory function through the enforcement of university rules and regulations, in addition to state criminal and traffic laws.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Bachelor's Degree (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)
  • Three (3) years with the Oklahoma State University Police Department with 1 year at the rank of Sergeant or 5 years as a certified police officer with 2 years at the equivalent rank of Sergeant.
  • Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses: I. State of Oklahoma CLEET (Council of Law Enforcement, Education & Training) Advanced Certification or the ability to obtain Certification through reciprocity within six (6) months. Posses or obtain a valid Oklahoma Drivers within 30 days after employment, complete annual firearms qualification, mandated in service training as required by CLEET.
  • Skills, Proficiencies, and/or Knowledge:

Required

A Police Lieutenant must be physically fit and able to complete all duties normally expected of a law enforcement officer, standing for long periods. Is required that a police lieutenant have the ability to effectively communicate information in critical incidents to officers and members of the public. A Lieutenant must possess critical thinking skills in stressful situations with little or no supervision. Must be proficient in the following:

  • Modern police methods and procedures, including patrol, crime prevention, and traffic control.
  • Criminal law, with particular emphasis on apprehension, arrest, and custody of persons accused of misdemeanors and felonies.
  • Rules of evidence pertaining to search and seizure and the preservation and presentation of evidence.
  • Criminal Investigation techniques, crime scene procedures, and emergency operations procedures.
  • Principles of supervision, employee relations, performance reviews, resource allocation, and police liability
  • Gather, assemble, analyze, and evaluate facts and evidence.
  • Draw logical conclusions from information and make proper recommendations.
  • Analyze situations quickly and accurately, and take effective courses of action.
  • Clery classification and reporting knowledge.

Must have the ability to qualify annual with department weapon systems, meet annual training requirements as per department policy and CLEET.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's
  • 10 years certified law enforcement experience, 5 years in a first line supervisor role, and experience in a university setting.
  • Certifications, Registrations, and/or Licenses: Same as required certifications listed
