About This Position

The Office of Student Success at Oklahoma State University empowers undergraduate students to achieve their academic, professional, and personal goals through intentional programs, proactive advising, and student first support services. The Assistant Director of Pre-Professional Support Services provides leadership for OSU’s pre‑professional initiatives and plays a key role in preparing students for competitive professional programs, including medicine, veterinary medicine, dentistry, law, and other graduate-level fields.

Reporting to the Assistant Provost for Student Success, the Assistant Director oversees pre-professional advising efforts, supervises staff, and delivers programming designed to help students explore professional pathways and strengthen their readiness for advanced study. The role also leads OSU’s expanded premed advising model, serving as the primary advisor for pre-med undecided students and secondary advisor for students with a declared pre-med emphasis. In addition, the Assistant Director provides training and ongoing support to academic advisors across campus who work with pre-med and pre-veterinary students, ensuring consistent, accurate, and student centered guidance.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Supervision

  • Recruit, train, supervise, and support professional staff responsible for delivering pre-professional support services.
  • Foster a student centered culture focused on integrity, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure services align with the university’s mission and student success priorities.

Pre-Professional Advising and Student Support

  • Take an active role in guiding and overseeing the team that provides academic advising for pre‑med undecided students, ensuring they receive expert support in academic planning, prerequisite sequencing, experiential preparation, and understanding professional school expectations.
  • Work closely with and supervise the advising team to offer secondary guidance for students on pre‑med tracks with declared emphases, collaborating with college advisors to ensure coordinated student support.
  • Oversee and participate in the advising process for students pursuing other pre‑professional pathways, such as pre‑veterinary, pre‑dental, pre‑law, and additional graduate or professional programs.
  • Lead and engage with the team in developing effective advising strategies and resources that support career exploration, application planning, interview preparation, and readiness for professional school admission.
  • Coordinate, support, and supervise the team’s efforts in delivering pre‑professional preparation courses.

Advisor Education and Cross Campus Collaboration

  • Design, deliver, and continuously refine pre‑med and other pre-professional training programs for academic advisors across campus.
  • Serve as a resource to advisors, faculty, and departments seeking guidance on prerequisites, admissions standards, application timelines, and best practices for supporting students pursuing medical, veterinary, and other professional fields.
  • Partner with campus stakeholders to ensure consistent advising experiences for all students on pre‑professional pathways.

Program Development and External Engagement

  • Collaborate with faculty, departments, and external partners to develop targeted workshops, panels, and events supporting pre‑professional student success.
  • Maintain relationships with professional schools, including OSU’s College of Osteopathic Medicine and College of Veterinary Medicine, admissions representatives, and related organizations to stay informed about evolving expectations and opportunities.
  • Promote OSU’s pre‑professional resources through outreach efforts, including newsletters, events, and website content.

Assessment, Data, and Budget Management

  • Collect, analyze, and report data on student engagement, outcomes, and service utilization to inform planning and improvement.
  • Track advising interactions and outcomes for pre‑med student populations to evaluate the effectiveness of the expanded advising model.
  • Support budget development and responsible resource management for pre‑professional initiatives.

Professional Engagement and Service

  • Stay informed about national trends, best practices, and changes in admissions requirements across pre‑professional fields, including medical and veterinary programs.
  • Represent the Office of Student Success on committees, task forces, and institutional initiatives related to academic success, retention, and advising.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant Provost for Student Success.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's in higher education administration, counseling, student affairs, or a related field (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date).
  • Three years of related administrative, counseling/academic advising, and teaching, training, or staff development experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supervising professional staff.
  • Experience in academic advising, particularly with pre‑health or pre‑professional student populations.
