What are the responsibilities and job description for the Family Trainer position at Oklahoma Disability Services?
Family Trainer
Working with Individuals with Developmental Disabilities
Oklahoma Disability Services (ODS) is seeking compassionate, dependable individuals to join our team as Family Trainers. Family Trainers work one-on-one and in small group settings with individuals who have intellectual and developmental disabilities, helping them build practical life skills, increase independence, and work toward meaningful personal goals.
This is an active, community-based position that combines teaching, coaching, and mentorship. Rather than providing therapy, personal care, or behavior management, Family Trainers use structured lessons and real-world experiences to help clients develop the practical skills needed for greater independence and success in everyday life.
If you're patient, adaptable, enjoy working with people, and want a career where you can see the difference you make, we'd love to hear from you.
Responsibilities
- Provide individualized, curriculum-based skill training in home and community settings.
- Teach practical life skills such as daily living, communication, social interaction, community safety, money management, employment readiness, independent living, technology use, self-advocacy, and other individualized skills based on each client's goals.
- Adapt teaching methods to each client's learning style, strengths, and support needs.
- Build positive, professional relationships with clients, families, caregivers, and residential staff.
- Encourage client independence while providing appropriate guidance and support.
- Document services accurately and complete required notes and billing documentation in a timely manner.
- Maintain regular communication with supervisors regarding client progress and concerns.
- Transport yourself to client locations throughout your assigned service area.
- Maintain client confidentiality and comply with all agency policies and state regulations.
- Participate in required meetings, training, and ongoing professional development.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Social Work, Education, Human Development, Special Education, or a related field.
- Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities, behavioral health, education, social services, childcare, or human services is preferred.
- Ability to effectively teach, motivate, and encourage individuals with varying learning styles.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining professionalism and accountability.
- Reliable transportation, a valid driver's license, and proof of automobile insurance.
- Ability to pass required background checks and any agency-required screenings.
- Basic computer skills for documentation and scheduling.
Preferred Qualities
We're looking for people who are:
- Patient and encouraging.
- Dependable and organized.
- Comfortable working independently in the community.
- Strong communicators.
- Flexible and able to adapt teaching strategies.
- Passionate about helping others become more independent.
Work Environment
Family Trainers provide services in clients' homes and throughout the community. Sessions may include activities such as grocery shopping, practicing community navigation, budgeting, meal preparation, recreation, employment skill development, or other activities directly related to each client's individualized goals.
This is not an office-based position. Family Trainers spend the majority of their workday in the community, traveling between client sessions and teaching skills in real-life environments where those skills are naturally practiced.
Scheduling is flexible, but must remain consistent, with most services occurring during daytime and early evening hours.
A Typical Day
A typical day may include:
- Teaching a client how to grocery shop and budget for meals.
- Practicing communication and social skills in the community.
- Helping someone learn to safely and independently access community resources.
- Teaching cooking, cleaning, laundry, or other household management skills.
- Working on employment readiness, interview skills, or workplace expectations.
- Completing documentation between sessions.
- Traveling to your next client.
Every day is different because every client has unique goals, interests, and support needs.
