Position Summary

Through a structured training program, the District Leader-in-Training will gain hands-on experience across customer service, billing operations, field operations, safety compliance, construction activities, regulatory requirements, team leadership, and district administration. The role is intended to develop the knowledge, skills, and leadership capabilities necessary to successfully lead a district operation and uphold Ohio Valley Gas's commitment to safety, customer service, operational excellence, and community engagement.

The District Leader-in-Training will work closely with district leadership, field personnel, and customer service team members to gain a comprehensive understanding of the responsibilities associated with leading a natural gas utility district. This position is expected to progressively assume increasing levels of responsibility throughout the training period in preparation for future leadership opportunities.

Responsibilities

District Operations and Leadership Development

  • Participate in a structured 12–24-month leadership development program designed to prepare for future district leadership responsibilities.
  • Develop a working knowledge of all district operations, including customer service, field operations, billing, safety, compliance, and administration.
  • Gain experience supporting daily district activities and operational decision-making.
  • Assist district leadership in planning, coordinating, and executing district priorities and initiatives.
  • Develop leadership skills necessary to effectively lead teams, manage resources, and achieve organizational objectives.

Field Operations and Safety

  • Complete Operator Qualification (OQ) training and other required technical certifications.
  • Participate in utility construction, maintenance, service, and compliance activities.
  • Learn and apply federal, state, and company safety requirements.
  • Develop an understanding of pipeline integrity, system reliability, emergency response, and regulatory compliance.
  • Support field planning and resource coordination activities.

Customer Experience and District Administration

  • Complete customer service and billing operations training.
  • Perform customer service activities and support customer issue resolution.
  • Develop an understanding of customer acquisition, service activation, billing processes, collections, and customer retention.
  • Learn district administrative processes, reporting requirements, and financial responsibilities.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate operational and customer records.

Team Leadership and Culture

  • Build relationships with team members across the organization.
  • Observe and participate in leadership discussions, team meetings, and operational planning activities.
  • Support a positive work environment aligned with Ohio Valley Gas values.
  • Demonstrate leadership behaviors that encourage accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop skills related to coaching, communication, conflict resolution, and team development.

Qualifications

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Associate's degree in engineering, construction management, business, or related field preferred.
  • Experience in construction, utility operations, field services, customer service, or related industries preferred.
  • Previous leadership experience is beneficial but not required.
  • Equivalent combinations of education, experience, and demonstrated leadership potential may be considered.
