Job Summary:
The Director is responsible for devising and executing a comprehensive major gift fundraising plan to maximize charitable support for the University and an assigned portfolio through the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major gift prospects.
Scope:
The Director of Development will design and execute a comprehensive advancement plan that includes major gift fundraising, donor relations, stewardship, and prospect development for an assigned portfolio.
This is a hybrid position. Occasional night and weekend hours. Regular in-state travel and some out-of-state travel.

Principal Responsibilities
The Director of Development will:
- build a strong major gift and philanthropic culture among ONU’s constituents;
- close major gifts, and identify, attract, and add new donors, meeting or exceeding specific targets and goals;
- support, assist, and partner with other development staff and institutional leaders;
- collaborate with colleagues and institutional leaders on appropriate cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship visits;
- participate in the life of the University and Advancement, including special events, alumni events, and annual events such as Homecoming, Giving Day, and donor recognition events, with some evenings and weekends required;
- work closely with Alumni Relations and volunteer leadership, including advisory board and working group members, to develop relationships with alumni and donors;
- occasionally present reports, projects, and opportunities to group audiences such as advisory boards;
- travel on day trips and some overnight and multiple-night trips;
- identify and cultivate potential Lehr Society donors in conjunction with the Office of University Advancement;
- complete administrative tasks associated with major gifts work, such as fund documentation, gift documentation, and stewardship plans; and
- express a passion for the impact that ONU can have on students, alumni, and the community.

Required Skills:
The ideal candidate will possess a strong knowledge of fundraising, particularly advancement in a higher education setting and planned giving vehicles, as well as strong behavioral competencies and attributes described below.

- Experience and demonstrated success in fundraising and advancement strategies and techniques
- Expertise in practices in higher education that ensure compliance with governmental and University policies and regulations
- Knowledge about developing and promoting donor acquisitions and renewal programs
- Ability to manage and analyze data in order to improve renewal and upgrade rates, average gifts, and other measurable results
- Ability to use the internet, social media, word processing, spreadsheets, and database software programs, and adhere to policies and best practices in data security

Minimum Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field
- Experience in fundraising or equivalent activities such as business development, marketing or sales
- Experience in relationship-building functions
- Experience in engaging constituencies and working with volunteers
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- A valid driver’s license and safe driving record
Preferred Qualifications:
- 3 years in successful major gifts work, including planned giving
- Graduate degree
- Successful experience at a like-sized higher education institution or complex nonprofit organization
- Experience working with the RE NXT CRM
