Position: Archaeology Technician
Status: Full time, seasonal
Location: Fort Laurens, Boliver OH
Salary: $21 per hour
Summary:
The Archaeological Technician provides assistance in excavating and documenting of the Fort Laurens archaeological site for the 2025 summer field season. The role will assist the Ohio History Connection Project Director with excavations, construction monitoring, recording, excavation documentation, artifact identification, cataloging, and possible report writing. The position is located in Boliver, Ohio.
Essential Functions:
- Conduct all aspects of archaeological fieldwork similar to a CRM Phase III project.
- Conduct construction monitoring where necessary.
- Conduct resource photography and unit mapping in the field.
- Perform initial processing and cataloging of artifacts while in the field.
- Contribute to technical reports of the results of archaeological fieldwork.
- Engage with the public.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree (or higher) in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field.
- 3 - 5 years of archaeological field experience in CRM, academic, or museum settings.
- Familiarity with Midwest pre-contact and post-contact archaeology.
- Familiarity with 18th century American history.
- The ability to professionally work in a public space with local volunteers and site visitors, including large groups of students.
- Knowledge of historic preservation laws and policies, including NHPA and NAGPRA.
Desired Skills & Experience
- Expertise in 18th century American, European and Native American histories and artifact assemblages.
- Knowledge of and experience with historic artifact identification, cataloging, and analysis.
- Phase III experience on contact or precontact archaeological sites.
- A demonstrated ability to document excavations clearly and professionally.
- The ability to work with stakeholders and colleagues with differing perspectives on archaeological practices.
Required Competencies
- The ability to communicate effectively to both staff and the public with professionalism and competency.
- A strong cultural competency when working with Native American Indian stakeholders.
- Self-directed and flexible.
