Ethics Commission Advisory Attorney (Attorney 4)

What You'll Do

The Ohio Ethics Commission is seeking an experienced Advisory Staff Attorney to help further its mission to promote ethics in public service and support the day-to-day operation of the agency.

The following duties will be typical for this position. Other duties may be required or assigned:

• Serve as a management level attorney providing legal counsel & advice to state and local public officials, public employees, the Executive Director and Commissioners on policy development and implementation relating to advisory functions of the Ethics Commission.
• Conduct legal research on the Ethics Law and related statutes and provide advice for Commission staff and the public about the application of the Ohio Ethics Law and related statutes.
• Review and analyze proposed Ethics Commission administrative rule changes.
• Review, revise, and edit written formal, informal, and staff advisory opinions and other material written by advisory staff.
• Respond to telephone, email and written inquiries from public officials and employees and the general public on the Ohio Ethics Commission and the application of the Ohio Ethics Law and related statutes and updates advisory files, records, and logs.
• Answer questions for Commission staff, public officials, and employees about the financial disclosure law and filing requirements.
• Maintain and administer R.C. 102.04 (D) statements filed by public officials and employees.
• Attend and participate in Commission and Advisory Committee meetings and prepare charts, opinions, memoranda, statistical information and other advisory section related materials to be presented at the meetings.
• Provide advice and prepare legal memoranda, articles, and other documents for Ethics Commission and staff.
• Present speeches on Ethics Law and related statutes.
  
  

Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment

Admission to Ohio Bar pursuant to Section 4705.01 of Revised Code; 12 mos. exp. as licensed attorney; 6 mos. exp. in employee training & development.

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT REQUIRED TO REMAIN IN THE CLASSIFICATION AFTER EMPLOYMENT :

Completion of 24 credit hours of continuing legal education from accredited programs for applicable two-year reporting period pursuant to Rule X of Rules of Government of Bar of Ohio. Current certificate of registration pursuant to Rule VII of Rules of Government of Bar of Ohio

The Ohio Ethics Commission is an independent, bipartisan board comprised of six members who are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate. The Commission was established as part of the Ohio Ethics Law in 1973. These laws protect the public against public officials and employees acting on potential conflicts of interest involving their private interests or those of their family members or business associates.

The Commission has authority over approximately 18,700 elected officials and 590,000 public employees across Ohio at all levels of state and local government, except for legislators and judges. The Commission also has authority over individuals in the private and non-profit sectors who are required to comply with the Ethics law when doing business with or being regulated by public agencies throughout Ohio.
