DYS is the juvenile corrections system for the state of Ohio. DYS is statutorily mandated to confine felony offenders, ages 10-21, who have been adjudicated and committed by one of Ohio's 88 county juvenile courts. During their stay with DYS, youth are engaged in programming that is designed to address their criminological and behavioral needs. DYS reaches thousands of youth in facilities and those on parole.
Our Guiding Principles…
Specifically, The Chaplain Will
- Plan, develop, and implement all religious programs and activities (e.g., sermons, bible studies, religious counseling).
- Plan, develop, direct, and implement a religious educational program that is designed to complement the overall treatment program and treatment goals of the institution.
- Plan, organizes and coordinate the religious and volunteer program for the institution.
- Conduct and coordinate religious services and sacred rites for youth which may involve several different faith groups.
- Plan, develop and conduct religious related programs such as religious holidays and other programs designed to provide therapeutic assistance to youth.
- Provide a wide range of services for youth (e.g., choir, special events, holiday & birthday celebrations, etc.).
- Attend staff meetings, seminars and conferences.
- Meets and works with community and religious leaders to promote and cultivate positive community relationships.
- Visit living area units and youth in hospital.
- Meets with new youth to complete religious assessments in order to determine areas of spiritual needs.
- Attend funerals and visits hospitalized youth & staff.
- Provide pastoral care to those who are in grief over loss of loved ones, by attending funeral services & ministering beyond the experience.
- Perform other duties within the religious department, such as completing requisitions for supplies and equipment.
- Maintain confidential records and files and attends training as needed.
- Speak before professional, academic, civic & other lay groups on programs of the Ohio Department of Youth Services & institution concerned.
- Contact and/or meet with community religious leaders & maintains confidential records.
- Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above may be substituted for the experience requirements, but not for the mandated endorsement or ordination.
