What You'll Do...

  • The supervisory level class works under direction and requires thorough knowledge of professional nursing
  • Coordinates medical and psychiatric nursing services within specialized mental health unit
  • Coordinates and/or assists in nursing assessments, nursing intervention, planning, evaluation and delivery of medical and psychiatric nursing services to patient/offenders and evaluates the care of patient/offenders.
  • Evaluates performance and counsels/advises staff in psychiatric nursing department; ensures that all nursing care is provided with regard to needs of offenders and those of special populations.
  • Communicates with institutions Health Care Administrators (HCA) on coordination of doctor call and chronic care clinic appointments.
  • Coordinates sick call on specialized mental health units.
  • Serves on multi-disciplinary treatment team as needed.
  • Assists in developing and implementing program policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for all psychiatric nursing department services.
  • Ensures that all psychiatric nursing care is provided with regard to needs of special populations.
  • Ensures timely completion of daily, monthly and special reports/action plans (including QI).
  • Assists in psychiatric nursing assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation for delivery of psychiatric nursing services to offenders.
  • Implements quality improvement guidelines and recommendations.
  • Complies with all facility and DRC rules, procedures and policies and monitors psychiatric nursing department staff for compliance.
  • Serves on quality improvement committee as needed.
  • Coordinates psychiatric audits of programs for psychiatric nursing department based upon recommendations.
  • Reviews incident reports and recommends and implements changes needed to correct problems related to the psychiatric nursing department.
  • Provides professional nursing services as needed
  • Organizes, develops and provides training of treatment and facility staff on psychiatric (including age and gender specific) nursing pro-grams, and policies and procedures.
  • Ensure tracking is in place for AIMS, psychotropic medication expiration dates, metabolic syndrome, informed consents, psychiatrist/prescriber appointments
  • Maintains proficiency in the electronic health record.
  • Providers training with the electronic health record
  • Ensures intervention is provided for offenders below medication compliance established in policy.
  • Directly supervise staff.
  • Supervises staff and makes timely decisions (e.g., assigns work and provides direction, reviews work and provides feedback, establishes goals and monitors and evaluates performance; encourages staff development, approves/disapproves leave and/or overtime, conducts staff meetings, recommends disciplinary action).
  • Develops and maintains nursing staff schedules.
  • Conducts interviews and recommends hiring.
  • Assists with recruitment and retention of psychiatric nursing staff and temporary contract coverage.
  • Attends trainings and conferences
  • Performs other related duties (e.g., works on special projects, audit teams, committees) as assigned.

Requires current license as registered professional nurse in state of Ohio as issued by Board of Nursing per Section 4723.03 of Revised Code; 24 mos. exp. in psychiatric nursing or delivery of nursing services to persons with developmental disabilities; 3 mos. trg. or 3 mos. exp. in employee training & development; 3 courses or 9 mos. exp. in public relations; 3 courses or 9 mos. exp. in counseling.

  • Or equivalent of the Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above may be substituted for the experience requirements, but not for the mandated licensure.
