Documentation Field Training Officer (FTO) role at Ohio Ambulance in Cleveland:

🧭 Core Responsibilities

  • Training & Mentorship: Guide new employees on policies, procedures, documentation (PCR/EPCR), and orientation.
  • Operational Support: Assist with scheduling tools (Employee Scheduler, BambooHR), recruitment needs, and supervisory duties when needed.
  • Leadership & Evaluation: Act as a role model, evaluate team performance, and uphold organizational standards and image.
  • Fleet & Supplies: Ensure readiness, restocking, and equipment maintenance.

📋 Eligibility & Application

  • Open to EMTs, and Paramedics with at least 90 days of tenure at Ohio Ambulance.
  • Must transition to full-time status upon acceptance.
  • Application includes two interviews, with a request to present an original idea for improving a practice or process.

POSITION TITLE:

Field Training Officer


POSITION IDENTIFICATION:

Reports to: Lead Field Training Officer

FLSA Code: Non-Exempt


POSITION PURPOSE AND SUMMARY:


Field training has a significant impact on the trainee in terms of imprinting mission, vision, values, and ethics of Ohio Ambulance and in carrying out the duties of EMS work that will remain with trainees throughout their career. Consequentially, it has the potential to be the most effective influence on the future direction of the company. The field training staff have the monumental responsibility of building the future of the company through the people they train.

Through the direction of the Field Training Officer leadership team, the FTOs must be certain that the field training program, which introduces EMT’s to the company, not only develops the necessary technical skills but also reflects the philosophy of the company and the community that it serves.

To assure success in this task, the field training program must have a training philosophy that ensures that every trainee is given the maximum opportunity to show that he or she can do the job. To accomplish this, the program must create a positive and encouraging environment in which learning is maximized and in which trainees are able to perform to the best of their ability. The approach must be fair, firm, friendly, and, above all, professional. The example set must be beyond reproach. Evaluation must be sincere and given in a straightforward manner emphasizing the positive as well as the negative aspects of performance. At no time should trainees be demeaned or ridiculed. Even the least capable trainee must be treated with respect and compassion. No trainees should ever be treated in a way that deprives them of their dignity. Every effort must be made to ensure that any stress felt by the trainee is met with compassion and mentorship by the FTO.

Ohio Ambulance team members have a responsibility to the community they serve. This responsibility requires that the company trains and retains only the most competent proactive EMT’s. Supreme dedication and patience are required to be successful in the FTO role.

A feeling of accomplishment will come in watching the trainee succeed. If the company and its field training staff have fully carried out their responsibilities, they may see their trainee exceed even beyond their own accomplishments, which is a direct reflection on the quality of the Field Training Officer.

QUALIFICATIONS:


In addition to the regular EMT and/or Paramedic qualifications, an FTO will also:



  • Be motivated to educate providers in quality care.

  • Be familiar with all agency policies, procedures, and guidelines.

  • Demonstrate a willingness to adapt to a leadership role consistent with a focus on continuous quality improvement.

  • Be flexible; demonstrate the capability to accept responsibilities, give directions, and lead by example.

  • Be able to maintain a positive attitude under a variety of conditions and relate appropriately to a variety of individuals.

  • Have effective written and verbal communication skills.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 


In addition to the regular EMT and/or Paramedic responsibilities, an FTO will also:


  • Complete Train the Trainer.
  • Provide initial training, guidance, and support for new personnel.
  • Keep seasoned EMTs current and provide refresher and remedial training as needed.
  • Identify problems, or potential problems, that may be solved through either training or counseling and make the appropriate recommendations for their resolution.
  • Make recommendations to develop new or revise existing agency policies and procedures as needed.
  • Model proper OAS policies and procedures; ensure that they are all met. Be a role model by demonstrating acceptable standards to peers.
  • Maintain constant awareness of the organizations image.
  • Constantly Evaluate, Identify, and Demonstrate in the absence of a supervisor, the high level of expectations and needs of the organization.
  • Identify problems and create or implement a plan to solve them.
  • Set training priorities based on the abilities or progression of the candidate; continue to reassess the candidate’s training needs.
  • Provide constant support to employees to help them grow by assisting them with their weaknesses, while acknowledging their strengths.
  • Accept additional assignments and duties delegated by management. May include management and training in the following areas:
    • Nauto, MVA Reporting, Vehicle Maintenance, Cots, Cot Batteries, Stair chairs, Mega Movers, Incident Reporting, End of Shift Duties Forms, Truck Check Forms, Shift Duties, OMTB Inspections, Supply Inventory, Amendments, and Paperwork Compliance
  • Serve as subject matter expert in your specialty: Emergency Vehicle Operation, Patient Movement, Shift Duties & Timekeeping. Patient Assessment & Treatment (Paramedic Position), or Documentation.
