Job Title: Substitute School Nurse

Position Purpose
The Substitute School Nurse provides health services to students and staff in the absence of the regular school nurse. This role supports student learning by promoting a healthy school environment, addressing immediate health concerns, and ensuring compliance with district policies and state regulations.
Essential Functions
- Provide basic health care and first aid to students and staff.
- Administer medications in accordance with physician orders and district policy.
- Respond to medical emergencies and implement appropriate interventions.
- Monitor and support students with chronic health conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, allergies).
- Maintain accurate and confidential student health records.
- Communicate with school staff and administration regarding student health needs.
- Follow individual health plans (IHPs), 504 plans, and emergency care plans.
- Assist in implementing communicable disease control procedures.
- Ensure compliance with state and district health regulations and protocols.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized health office.
Additional Duties
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the building principal or district administration.
Qualifications
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) licensure in the State of Iowa.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification.
- Previous experience in pediatric, school, or community health preferred.
- Knowledge of school health regulations and practices preferred.

- Effective communication and interpersonal skills with students, staff, and families.

- Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the school building.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Ability to respond quickly in emergency situations.
Work Environment
- School setting with frequent interaction with students and staff.
- Exposure to communicable illnesses and minor injuries.
Terms of Employment
- Compensation and work year will be determined by the district substitute pay schedule.
- Employment is on an as-needed basis.
