MAINTENANCE TECHNICIAN I - OPERATIONS

Department: Public Services

Division: Storm Water/Sewer

Pay Grade: GRADE 120: $44,780.65 - $64,931.95 Annual Salary ($21.53 - $31.22 Hourly Rate).

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Full-Time, Eligible for benefits.

GENERAL PURPOSE

This position assists in performing semi-skilled and unskilled labor in the construction, maintenance, and related service activities related to street, sewer/storm, traffic, and utility maintenance. Receives direct supervision from the Maintenance Supervisor or Maintenance Crew Leader.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Operate construction and maintenance equipment and power tools such as dump trucks, front-end loader, and backhoe, vactor, flush truck, compressors, jack hammers, paint sprayers, sand blasters, concrete saws, sewer rodders, mowers, edgers and blowers or any other equipment needed in sewer and storm water maintenance and repairs.
  • Maintain hand tools and assigned equipment; perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
  • Install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of sewer and storm water
  • Direct and control traffic around work sites.
  • Be available for recall during any hour for storm sewer emergencies, snow/ice control work, or other emergency conditions.
  • Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
  • Inspect and clear obstructions from storm drains, sewer lines, gutters, and culverts, assist in repair on sewer mains, manholes; tap sewer mains.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner and provide information within the area of assignment.
  • Resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Perform snow removal and ice control duties as required.
  • Respond to and resolve difficult and sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints.
  • Willing to accept duty as the Division's stand-by person for a one-week period and respond to emergency calls 24-hours a day during this period.
  • Participate in safety and risk management activities; take action to reduce liability to the city.
  • Attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position. Employee is required to work as a team and frequently meet with co-workers and supervisors; employee is required to communicate in-person with the public during office hours and after when on call; and employee is required to use on-site equipment.
  • Perform other related duties as required/assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • At least one year of general maintenance experience performing field maintenance work.
  • High school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be qualifying.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid, Class A Utah CDL driver's license with tanker endorsement within 150 days of hire.
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a wastewater 1 certification within one year (if hired in the Sewer Division).
  • Employee will be required to complete NIMS IS100, IS200, IS700 and IS800 within one year of hire.

Failure to obtain/maintain the license and certificate as outlined above will result in termination from the position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of general construction, maintenance, and repair related to the area of work assigned.
  • Knowledge of the operational characteristics of mechanical equipment and tools used around work assigned.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Skill in working independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Skill in performing heavy manual labor.
  • Skill in applying proper procedures for Blue Staking, including marking underground utilities, and identifying all markings.
  • Skill in operating a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Skill in performing a variety of manual tasks, for extended periods of time, in unfavorable conditions.
  • Skill in communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include, walking and standing for extended periods of time, and operating assigned equipment.
  • Ability to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: making observations, communicating with others, and operating assigned equipment and vehicles as required by the position.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Ability to maintain mental capacity which allows for effective interaction and communication with others.
  • Ability to comply with all city policies and regulations, including safety and risk management standards.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work environment is primarily outdoors, which may expose the employee to moderate to very loud noises, wet or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, high and precarious places, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, and vibrations.
  • Travel among worksites is required, which exposes the worker to the hazards incident to travel by vehicle.
  • Will be expected to respond to and work additional shifts as the need arises to include 12-hour (longer in emergency) shifts, weekends, and holidays.
  • The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and/or up to 25 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Must possess the visual ability to see clearly at close (less than 20 inches) and far (20 feet or more) distances, identify and distinguish colors, observe an area that can be seen up and down or the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point, judge distances and spatial relationships, and adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.
  • Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: standing, walking, sitting, using hands and fingers to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, talking, hearing, and smelling.
