LOCATION:    Position will be primarily remote in Texas (This position will be geographically located in the city where you are hired. If an employee desires to move from the agreed city, they can follow a process to request relocation from Human Resources, but approval is not guaranteed.)

The Texas Civil Rights Project (TCRP) is a community lawyering organization boldly serving the movement for equality and justice in and out of the courts, seeking to advance a vision of a Texas where all communities can thrive with dignity and justice, without fear. TCRP comprises three regional offices across Texas, with over 50 employees and an annual budget exceeding $7 million. As a community-based organization, TCRP requires staff to live in Texas. TCRP strives for geographic diversity within the state. To accomplish greater geographic coverage of Texas, TCRP also employs staff in fully remote positions in cities where TCRP does not maintain an office. Some travel is required for in-person activities.

At TCRP, we are Texas lawyers for Texas communities. We use legal advocacy and litigation to empower Texas communities and create change. In recent years the Texas Legislature has embarked on an aggressive campaign to restrict civil rights in the Lone Star State. As a result, TCRP has become more involved in the legislative process to protect the basic freedoms of all Texans – especially those of marginalized communities whose voices are rarely heard in the halls of power. As the Texas progressive movement’s go-to lawyers, we can support advocacy in the Legislature in ways that almost no other organization can – such as by empowering grassroots organizations with quick and detailed analyses of complicated bills, spotting obscure opportunities in legislative rules and processes for effective advocacy, expanding the diversity of existing coalitions by bringing new groups into the fold, and uniting the movement behind joint advocacy efforts.

In anticipation of new attacks on civil rights during the 90th Legislative Session that begins in January 2027, we are seeking a Legislative Coordinator to build and operate the infrastructure of our legislative program. The Legislative Coordinator will hold primary responsibility for tracking bills and key relationships; coordinating internal and external meetings; representing TCRP in certain coalition spaces; assisting with legislative session-related education and other public materials; and providing other key administrative functions for the policy team. ABOUT THE POSITION

This position is a short-term employment position that will end on July 31st, 2027, with a possible extension to include one or more Special Sessions. If travel to other parts of the state will be required,it will be reimbursed accordingly. The Legislative Coordinator will be directly supervised by TCRP’s Associate Director of Policy.

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

• Track bills, legislative hearings, and key relationships with legislative and grassroots allies;

• Coordinate internal and some external meetings;

• Represent TCRP in coalition spaces related to legislative advocacy;

• Assist with legislative session-related education and other public materials;

• Coordinate with members of all three TCRP legal programs doing legislative work to ensure they have the tools they need to perform their work and that our teams are not working at cross purposes;

• Develop relationships with partner organizations, legislative members and staff, and other legislative stakeholders;

• Monitor legislative hearings; and

• Provide other key administrative functions for this body of work

• Available during some non-traditional hours to monitor early, late, and or/weekend legislative activity

QUALIFICATIONS

• Experience working on progressive issues, including in particular in the Texas Legislature or in local Texas government

• Strong experience in community or labor organizing or working on political campaigns

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

• Proficiency in the Google Suite – particularly Google Sheets – and Microsoft Excel.

• Experience with the Telicon legislative tracking tool is a strong plus

• Ability to take initiative, solve problems, and quickly jump onto urgent matters as they come up

• Ability to build strong relationships across diverse communities—including in particular communities of color, persons with disabilities, and immigrant communities—and across different teams internally

• Ability to get people to take action, including being able to tell a compelling story about why this work is important

• Can juggle and prioritize across multiple projects without dropping any balls.

• Can spot opportunities and jump on them

• An understanding of the civil rights landscape in Texas, and a passion to make it better

• Ability to read, write, and speak a language other than English is a plus.

• Ability to occasionally work outside of traditional business hours to meet the needs of a busy legislative session

COMPENSATION

The salary for this position is based on years of experience with an annual range of $62,000 - $79,306.66 . TCRP also offers excellent benefits, professional development opportunities and a deep commitment to a meaningful work-life balance.
