Duties

As a Managing Attorney, You Will

  • Provide executive leadership for the Branch's legal, operational, and administrative functions.
  • Plan, direct, and oversee the work of attorneys, legal support, and administrative staff engaged in complex litigation and legal matters.
  • Oversee legal operations, including case management, workload distribution, resource allocation, and operational efficiency.
  • Manage a limited portfolio of significant and complex legal matters and serve as the escalation point for sensitive issues.
  • Advise senior leadership on significant legal, policy, management, and operational matters.
  • Oversee personnel management, budgeting, and other administrative operations.
  • Represent the Branch and collaborate with Department leadership, federal agencies, courts, and other stakeholders to advance the Branch's mission.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

This is not a remote location position. You will be required to work in person five days a week.

  • May be required to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance with eligibility for Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI) access depending on organizational assignment / duty location.
  • It is the policy of the Department to achieve a drug-free workplace and persons selected for employment will be required to pass a drug test which screens for illegal drug use prior to final appointment.
  • Financial Disclosure: If selected, you will be required to disclose financial information in accordance with DOJ and Federal ethics guidelines.
  • This position has supervisory/managerial responsibilities. A one-year supervisory/managerial probationary period is required upon selection. This may be waived if you have successfully completed the supervisory/managerial probationary period.

Qualifications

Interested applicants must possess a J.D., or equivalent, degree; be duly licensed and authorized to practice as an attorney under the laws of any State, territory of the United States, or the District of Columbia; and be an active member of the bar in good standing.

To qualify at the GS-15 grade level, applicants must have a minimum of 4 years post-JD legal experience.

Preferred qualifications: Applicants should possess demonstrated experience leading or supervising legal professionals, managing complex legal matters or litigation, and advising senior leadership on significant legal, policy, or operational issues.

Trial Period Statement

Required

  • whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service.

Upon completion of your trial period your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.
