What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Attorney General, Maryland Department of Transportation position at Office of the Attorney General?
Description
The Attorney General is the chief legal officer of the State of Maryland. The Office of the Attorney General (OAG) has the general charge, supervision, and direction of the State's legal business, acting as legal advisors and representatives of the major agencies, various boards, commissions, officials, and institutions of State Government. The OAG also protects the public by civil enforcement of antitrust, civil rights, consumer protection, and securities laws and regulations and by the prosecution of organized crime, Medicaid fraud, environmental crimes, insurance fraud, state tax evasion, and other statutorily assigned matters. As Maryland's 47th Attorney General, Anthony G. Brown leads the Office with a critical focus on equity, justice, and fairness.
The OAG is seeking applicants to serve as an Assistant Attorney General to the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT). MDOT, which encompasses five modal administrations and the Maryland Transportation Authority, is responsible for the State's highway, transit, motor vehicle, port, and aviation functions. MDOT attorneys provide advice on a variety of matters, such as real estate, grants, public finance, procurement, personnel/EEO/employee relations, employee safety, risk management, homeland security, Public Information Act, Minority Business Enterprise, and ethics. This position also involves representation of MDOT and its modes in litigation in courts and before administrative agencies, as well as providing advice on the legality of proposed legislation and regulations. It may also involve advice to various boards and commissions.
This position is litigation-focused and requires the ability to represent MDOT in all stages of litigation in State and federal courts, including administrative hearings. Litigation matters typically involve personnel disputes, civil rights and EEO claims, public-private partnerships, and contractual disputes.
The MDOT legal team consists of the Principal Counsel, Deputy Counsel, and three Assistant Attorneys General, supported by an Administrative Assistant and an Office Manager. Our office collaborates closely with MDOT's six modal administrations and their respective legal teams, which together include approximately 75 attorneys. This is a great opportunity to help shape Maryland's transportation future.
