Senior Trial Attorney (Domestic Violence Prosecutor)

The Office of the Second Judicial District Attorney improves the quality of life of the citizens of Bernalillo County by reducing crime through thoughtful enforcement of the law and the development of a criminal justice system. The Office is an Equal Employment Opportunity Employer and is seeking applicants for a Senior Trial Attorney position. Pursuant to the New Mexico District Attorney’s Compensation Plan, the position of attorney is “At Will” and serves at the pleasure of the District Attorney.

*Purpose: This position provides for the prosecution of Domestic Violence crimes.  

* Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: This position requires comprehensive and current knowledge and skills in the areas of criminal prosecution, rules of evidence and rules of criminal procedure; public relations; organization and supervision; basic computer skills including working knowledge of office systems; fully effective trial skills; ability to draft legal documents; ability to work effectively with other criminal agencies; ability to communicate effectively; ability to research/analyze information and situations. Works independently with minimal consultation with supervisors (except for higher profile or complex cases). Significant prosecutorial discretion on cases within assigned caseload.  Comprehensive knowledge about the rules and laws regarding search warrants and the ability to work/collaborate with law enforcement to ensure search warrants are written to assist in evidence collection necessary for each investigation.  Working knowledge on search and seizure laws and the ability to spot potential issues in cases. Knowledge or ability to learn civil rules of procedure, specifically, family court and Orders of protection and knowledge of NMSA 40-13-1 & NMSA 40-17-1

* Requirements: Licensed attorney to practice law in good standing either in New Mexico or another state with a New Mexico limited license, plus a minimum of four (4) years as a practicing attorney in criminal law or three (3) years as a prosecuting attorney.

* Preferred Qualifications: Five (5) to seven (7) years or more of relevant prosecution experience.

* Working Conditions: Work is performed in office, courtroom and community environments. Some physical effort and travel may be required. Incumbent may be required to work under stressful situations and/or conditions. 

This is a grant funded position, employment is dependent upon funding.  Salary is commensurate with experience.
