The Office of Family Representation and Advocacy (OFRA) provides high quality legal representation and advocacy for New Mexico families in the child abuse and neglect system.

Why does the job exist?

The Attorney position will provide legal representation for children, youth, eligible adults, indigent parents, and other legal parties who are the subject of, or who are at risk of being the subject of, abuse or neglect proceedings, Families in Need of Court Ordered Services (FINCOS) proceedings of Fostering Connections proceedings. This includes proceedings for the termination of parental rights, adoption proceedings, or other abuse/neglect, FINCOS, or Fostering Connections proceedings designated by the Office of Family Representation and Advocacy.

How does it get done?

Duties for this position include:

- Providing legal representation for the parties listed above under guidance of the Legal Services Director.
- Drafting legal documentation such as legal memos, petitions, proposed orders, discovery documents, briefs, and other administrative and litigation related documents.
- Represent clients in court and administrative proceedings.
- Negotiate or review settlement agreements.
- Collaborate with OFRA Divisions to ensure that clients receive other appropriate services and support.

New Mexico children, youth, eligible young adults, indigent parents, and other legal parties who are subject or at risk of being the subject of proceedings designated by OFRA, as defined by statute.

- Appreciate of cultural diversity with a desire to make a difference in the lives in New Mexico.
- Ability to balance multiple competing demands.
- Bilingual skills preferred.
-       Newly licensed attorneys encouraged to apply.

Minimum Qualification

Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited school of law. Must be licensed as an attorney by the Supreme Court of New Mexico or qualified to apply for limited practice license.

Employment Requirements

All Attorney classifications must be and remain licensed as an attorney, in good standing, by the Supreme Court of New Mexico, or licensed as an attorney and in good standing by the highest court of another state and eligible pursuant to the limited license provisions (See Rules 15-301.1 and 15-301.2 NMRA).

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting: late hours, weekends, on-call and callback work may be required. Will be exposed to regular periods of video display terminal and keyboard usage and stressful situations. Travel is required. Possible exposure to irate clientele. Incumbent will work under stress and frequent time constraints.

Supplemental Information

Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Bargaining Unit Position

This position is not covered by a collective bargaining agreement.

Salary : $81,349 - $130,159
