The Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) Sonographer is responsible for performing advanced diagnostic ultrasound examinations on pregnant patients, particularly those with high-risk pregnancies or suspected fetal abnormalities. This role utilizes specialized imaging techniques to evaluate fetal growth, anatomy, development, placental function, cervical length, and maternal health conditions that may impact pregnancy outcomes.

The MFM Sonographer works closely with Maternal-Fetal Medicine physicians, obstetricians, genetic counselors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide accurate diagnostic information that supports patient care, treatment planning, and clinical decision-making. The position requires expertise in obstetrical and gynecological ultrasound, strong technical proficiency, attention to detail, and the ability to effectively communicate with patients experiencing complex or high-risk pregnancies.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive fetal anatomy surveys, growth ultrasounds, biophysical profiles, Doppler studies, nuchal translucency examinations, cervical length assessments, and other specialized prenatal imaging procedures.
• Obtain high-quality diagnostic images and measurements in accordance with established protocols and professional standards.
• Identify and document fetal, placental, and maternal abnormalities for physician review and interpretation.
• Collaborate with physicians during advanced procedures and consultations.
• Maintain accurate patient records, imaging documentation, and exam reports within the electronic medical record (EMR) system.
• Educate and support patients regarding ultrasound procedures while maintaining sensitivity and professionalism during high-risk pregnancy evaluations.
• Ensure compliance with safety, infection control, quality assurance, and regulatory requirements.
• Participate in continuing education activities and maintain professional certifications and competencies in obstetrical and maternal-fetal imaging.
• Assist with equipment maintenance, quality control programs, and workflow improvement initiatives.
• Participate in a scheduled on-call rotation to provide after-hours, weekend, holiday, and emergent ultrasound coverage as required, responding promptly to urgent maternal-fetal medicine imaging needs and supporting continuity of patient care.

  Serve as a preceptor and mentor for sonography students, providing clinical instruction, hands-on training, guidance on ultrasound techniques and protocols, and ongoing feedback to support skill development and professional growth in accordance with educational and departmental standards.

Qualifications

• Associate's or bachelor's degree in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
• Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (RDMS) credential through ARDMS with OB/GYN specialty certification required.
• Additional certifications related to Fetal echocardiography or maternal-fetal medicine preferred.
• Experience performing advanced obstetrical ultrasound examinations, MFM or high-risk obstetrics setting- Preferred. 
• Strong knowledge of fetal anatomy, prenatal development, maternal health conditions, and ultrasound technology.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and critical-thinking skills.

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand, walk, and perform sonographic examinations for extended periods; lift and position equipment and patients as needed; and maintain visual and manual dexterity required for diagnostic ultrasound procedures.
