GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
Under administrative direction, the purpose of the position is to perform maintenance, landscaping, herbicide/pesticide application, irrigation, and supervisory work in the planning, organizing, and coordinating of projects and preventative maintenance. Employees in this classification perform work with considerable independence of action and latitude for decision-making within program guidelines under the direction of a classified Trades Tech or an administrative level supervisor. Employees are responsible for assisting crew leaders who have crews reporting to them. Performs related work as directed.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Functions independently, or leads work crews engaged in school district property landscape projects and tasks.
  • Ensures adherence to prescribed pesticide and herbicide application schedules and established district, state, federal, and environmental policies and standards.
  • Must understand environmental principals involved with pesticide and herbicide applications.
  • Ensures cleanliness, order, and environmentally safe conditions of district property; addresses safety concerns in a time efficient manner; reports real or potential environmental/maintenance concerns.
  • Ensures proper cleaning and maintenance of equipment, tools, and materials utilized; ensures adherence to principles and practices of safe use and operation of equipment, tools, and materials.
  • Operates OCPS Grounds’ vehicles with a trailer, to include herbicide spray rigs.
  • Responds to and takes appropriate actions in the event of emergency or critical incidents to resolve, confine or otherwise prevent potentially injurious or hazardous conditions.
  • Discusses facilities and property maintenance and repair projects with requesting schools, private contractors (when applicable), and district supervisory and managerial officials.
  • Interacts with private consultants/contractors, as needed, and inspects and monitors contractual work for compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Responsible for keeping up to date on current technology and license requirements as job appropriate, being used by OCPS. With the support of the district, attends training to ensure skill level in various technologies is at the level required to perform in current position.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  • Assists with various facilities and trades maintenance and repair tasks within scope of abilities.
  • While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.
  • Performs related duties as directed.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or GED; supplemented by five (5) years progressively skilled experience in property maintenance work, demonstrating leadership qualities and ability to fulfill the physical and dexterity requirement of the work, as applicable to the assigned maintenance area (i.e., grounds maintenance, pavement maintenance, tree trimming); vocational/technical training in equipment, irrigation systems and design and maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential job functions.

Effective August 24, 2009, all new hires to this position must successfully complete the Industrial Physical Capability Screening (IPCS); previous incumbents holding this position without a break in service or job title are not required to have this screening.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Within three (3) months of entering position, one must obtain a State of Florida limited certification in lawn and ornamental pest control.

Data Utilization: Requires the ability to compile, assemble, copy, record and/or transcribe data and/or information according to a prescribed schema or plan. Includes judging whether readily observable functional, structural or compositional characteristics are similar to or divergent from prescribed standards, procedures or routines.

Human Interaction: Requires the ability to provide guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others on how to apply procedures and standards to specific situations.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions. To include computers and associated programs, i.e. Microsoft Office and Outlook.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Functional Reasoning: Requires ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise the judgment; decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties, which are often characterized by, frequent change.

ADA COMPLIANCE

Physical Ability: Tasks involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50) pounds.

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination. Some tasks require oral communications ability.

Environmental Factors: Tasks are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as weather conditions of hot/cold temperatures and rain, dust, noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, strong odors and toxic/poisonous agents.

Pay: $18.08 - $18.98 per hour
