School Nurse

1:1 Nurse

Position start date: As soon as possible

Salary/Wage: Competitive

Terms/Schedule: 16-24 hours/week

10-month (182 days), Mon-Fri hours vary

Appointment Type: Part Time

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The duties described below are indicative of what a School Nurse may be asked to perform. Duties vary among schools and positions. This list is not meant to be all-inclusive; other duties may be assigned.

General Responsibilities:

1. Assists in the removal of health-related barriers to education for student(s) with complex medical needs.

2. Promotes optimal level of wellness for students and staff and promote a safe and secure school environment.

3. Provides emergency care and emergency medication training for staff. Individual and group trainings maybe required.

4. Conducts assessment, care plans, intervention, evaluation and referral for student(s) assigned to Nurse’s care.

5. Serves as communicator between the school, families, the medical community, and community agencies.

6. Upholds professional standards, state and local statutes and regulations applicable to school nursing practice.

7. Adheres to District policies and administrative guidelines.

8. Provide Emergency nursing services for student(s) they are assigned to as well as to any in individual experiencing a medical emergency at the school site.

Specific Responsibilities

1. Provides emergency nursing service.

a. Follows and helps implement the School District’s emergency care policies and procedures, which may include assisting with the instruction and training of school personnel.

b. Provides consultation services to staff on emergency care for illness and injury of students and staff.

2. Delivers health care services, in conjunction with the Director of Nursing Services and Administrative Assistant.

a. Establishes and maintains health records on student(s), adhering to the standard of professional confidentiality.

b. Provides nursing treatment and health procedures as appropriate and/or as directed by health care plan, 504 plan, or IEP. Assists with training others who assist with nursing procedures or other cares.

c. Participates in training of teachers and paraprofessionals who work with children with special health needs.

d. Provide direct nursing cares of health/illness needs of individuals during the school day.

e. Provide educational support.

f. Provide health room coverage or assists with district health needs.

g. Follows health room guidelines for care of students and documentation. Provide direct nursing cares to students with one-on-one nursing needs.

3. Acts as Counselor for health concerns of children, families, and staff.

a. Counsels individual student(s) and their families and school personnel on specific health problems, and identifies and refers them to appropriate community resources.

b. Serves as a resource for teachers on specific health problems of individual student(s).

c. Collaborates with other school professionals such as psychologists, social workers, and counselors.

4. Assists with and performs other district, school, or student support tasks as directed by building administrator or director of nursing services. Tasks may include but not limited to providing in classroom support for students with medical or educational needs, assisting with clerical tasks, providing care and coverage in any school and/or health room site.

5. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Training and Education

 Baccalaureate degree or Associates Degree in nursing

 Valid license to practice as a registered professional nurse in the State of Wisconsin.

 Current valid driver’s license.

Desired Experience/Education

 Public health or school nursing experience.

 Pediatric nursing experience

 Physical assessment skills.

 3 years of nursing experience.

Certification Requirements

 Maintain current certification in CPR

Special characteristics of the position:

Persons in this position must be able to:

 Address the health needs of students from theoretical frameworks of the growth and development of children.

 Provide consultation to school health room assistants in the evaluation and management of students’ health.

 Travel to different schools for various reasons. Flexibility to staff at any health room or school classroom in the district as needed.
