What are the responsibilities and job description for the Collection Site Attendant (Part-Time) position at Oconee County Georgia?
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to perform manual/clerical work functions associated with operating solid waste
collection sites, separating recyclable materials, collecting fees, and assisting the public. This position reports to the
Sanitation Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive.
Other duties may be required and assigned.
Opens/secures collection site gates, dumpsters, and trailer each day.
Assists the general public in disposal of refuse at collection sites; provides information and direction concerning refuse
separation and disposal procedures; directs customers on proper separation of recyclable materials; assists customers in
lifting bags into bins.
Inspects recycling dumpsters to ensure correct placement of recyclable materials; separates cardboard, glass, plastic,
paper or other recyclable materials; compacts/bales cardboard materials.
Operates computerized scales to weigh and price refuse brought to collection site.
Receives payments for department fees, blue bags, or other services; calculates fees and makes change; balances cash
receipts and records revenues; forwards receipts as appropriate.
Performs various manual work functions associated with collection site operations and maintenance, which may
include sweeping/cleaning areas around dumpsters and trailer, cleaning building and grounds, cutting grass/weeds,
assisting customers in unloading trash bags, lifting/moving heavy materials, and picking up debris/litter.
Operates a variety of equipment, machinery and tools associated with department activities, which may include a motor
vehicle, forklift, baler, mower, weedeater, shovel, broom, and rake.
Utilizes precautionary safety equipment and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other
individuals.
Monitors inventory of blue bags and other department supplies; initiates requests for new or replacement materials.
Maintains records of collection site activities, such as number of customers, quantity of recyclable materials brought to
site, quantity of bags sold, or other activity.
Prepares or completes various forms, correspondence, reports, time sheets, balance sheets, and other documents.
Receives various forms, reports, payments, or other documentation; reviews, processes, forwards or retains as
appropriate.
Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information and assistance; takes and relays messages or
directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to
coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
Conducts various errands as needed, which may include obtaining/delivering blue bags or other supplies, or
transporting cash receipts.
Provides assistance to other employees or departments as needed.
Performs other related duties as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by 2 to 4 months previous experience and/or training involving refuse
collection or general labor; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the
requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver’s license.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to use, operate, and/or handle
automated equipment and garden tools, such as a motor vehicle, forklift, baler, mower, weedeater, shovel, broom, and
rake.
Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a variety of reference data and information.
Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic
form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of
action.
Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment in situations characterized by repetitive or short
cycle operations covered by well established procedures or sequences.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically
demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching,
and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and
materials (20-50 pounds).
Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds,
odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental
conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes,
machinery, vibrations, traffic hazards, toxic agents, disease, or pathogenic substances.
