Position Summary:
The Welding Lead is responsible for overseeing day-to-day welding operations, ensuring all fabrication activities meet quality, safety, and production standards. This role provides hands-on welding expertise while guiding welders, coordinating workflow, training team members, and assisting the Fabrication Supervisor with planning and process improvements. The Welding Lead ensures high-quality workmanship, efficient production flow, and a safe, organized work environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Operational Leadership
- Lead and coordinate the daily activities of welders and fabrication personnel.
- Assign work based on production schedules, skill sets, and project priorities.
- Monitor progress to ensure deadlines, quality standards, and specifications are met.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for technical guidance and problem-solving on the shop floor.
Welding & Fabrication Expertise
- Perform advanced MIG welding on structural and precision components.
- Set up and optimize welding equipment and fixtures for various jobs.
- Support complex or critical welds requiring high skill and precision.
Quality Assurance & Inspection
- Review completed welds for accuracy, defects, and compliance with blueprints and engineering requirements.
- Conduct in-process inspections and final checks using gauges, measuring tools, and visual inspection methods.
- Train team members on proper weld techniques, blueprints, weld symbols, tolerances, and quality expectations.
Safety & Compliance
- Ensure adherence to all OSHA, company safety policies, and industry regulations.
- Identify potential safety hazards and immediately address or report them.
- Promote a clean, organized, and hazard-free work environment through routine shop audits.
Equipment & Maintenance
- Oversee proper use, storage, and maintenance of welding machines, tools, grinders, saws, and cutting equipment.
- Coordinate preventive maintenance activities and troubleshoot equipment issues.
- Assist in identifying needs for new equipment, repairs, or replacement parts.
Training & Development
- Provide ongoing training, coaching, and skill development for welders.
- Support onboarding of new hires and evaluate welding competency.
- Help build a strong team culture centered on safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Documentation & Communication
- Maintain accurate production records, inspection documentation, and welding logs.
- Communicate workflow needs, material shortages, equipment issues, and production updates to the Fabrication Supervisor.
- Collaborate with engineering, quality control, and other departments as needed.
Qualifications:
Education
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Technical or trade school certification in welding preferred.
Experience
- 4 years of welding experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
- Previous lead, supervisory, or team coordination experience strongly preferred.
Technical Skills
- Advanced proficiency in MIG welding processes.
- TIG and stick welding preferred.
- Strong understanding of metal properties and fabrication techniques.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, fabrication drawings, and technical documents.
- Familiarity with fabrication equipment and hand tools.
Certifications
- AWS (American Welding Society) certification preferred or equivalent.
- Additional specialty certifications a plus.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for long periods and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Manual dexterity and strong attention to detail.
