This job is responsible for maintaining standardization and compliance with sterile and non-sterile compounding regulations, in accordance with USP general chapters and medication safety standards. The position serves as a subject matter expert (SME) to ensure ongoing audit readiness, policy adherence, and training consistency across multiple pharmacy sites. Responsibilities include monitoring and enforcing compliance standards, supporting leadership in developing corrective actions, and collaborating with internal partners to maintain continuous readiness for Joint Commission and regulatory surveys. The role functions regionally and may oversee multiple facilities within the assigned area, ensuring consistent practices and performance across all sites.

Education

Required – High school diploma or equivalent

Work Experience

Required - Minimum of 5 years sterile IV and non-sterile compounding experience

Certifications

Required - Current Pharmacy Technician Certification issued by the Board of Pharmacy in the state of practice

ASHP Sterile Product Preparation Certificate

ASHP Hazardous Product Preparation Certificate

ASHP Medication Safety Certificate

Knowledge Skills And Abilities (KSAs)

  • In-depth knowledge of USP standards, aseptic technique, and compounding quality assurance.
  • Strong audit and compliance review skills, with ability to interpret and apply regulatory requirements.
  • Proficiency with Windows-style applications and pharmacy-related software (EHR, audit tracking, and reporting systems).
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across diverse environments.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and time management skills.

Job Duties

  • Serves as a regional subject matter expert (SME) on USP standards, aseptic technique, and sterile/non-sterile compounding compliance.
  • Conducts routine and mock audits, environmental monitoring reviews, and personnel competency validation to ensure continuous compliance readiness.
  • Supports development, enforcement, and monitoring of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and policies related to compounding and medication safety.
  • Trains and supports pharmacy technicians and staff on aseptic technique, cleaning, garbing, and compounding competency.
  • Develops and delivers standardized education material on compounding and medication safety topics, including non-sterile and sterile hazardous and non-hazardous compounding, aseptic technique, “Just Culture,” and Safety on Site (SOS) event reporting and cleanroom maintenance expectations.
  • Collaborates with System Medication Safety Officer in analyzing Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) Quarterly Reports and integrating findings into training and education.
  • Ensures adherence to cleanroom compliance and medication safety metrics across the system and validates trending data to support leadership in identifying quality improvement opportunities.
  • Facilitates perpetual survey readiness by conducting USP related documentation reviews, observation, and mock audits, and by supporting compliance with Joint Commission, USP, and ISMP standards.
  • Analyzes and reports compounding related metrics, trends, and quality indicator for system level visibility.
  • Supports audits and process improvement effects related to Epic Electronic Health Record (HER) Dispense Prep and Dispense Check functionality to ensure accuracy, compliance, and medication safety.
  • Collaborates with system-level and facility-level pharmacy leadership, quality, and safety teams to address compliance finding and implement corrective actions.
  • Coordinates and assist with onboarding and regional training for pharmacy technicians.
  • Provide support to inpatient, outpatient, and home infusion pharmacy compounding sites as needed.
  • Acts as a liaison between system-level pharmacy safety leadership and facility-level pharmacy teams, ensuring alignment on standards and corrective actions.
  • Travels across assigned region to perform audits, provide training, and monitor compliance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

(Constantly: activity or condition exists 2/3 or more of the time) to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Sedentary Work. The incumbent works with patients who have known or suspected communicable diseases and may enter isolation rooms. There may be an occupational risk for exposure to communicable diseases.

Because the incumbent works within a healthcare setting, there may be occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste within the environment through receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning and/or disposal of contaminated waste. The risk level of exposure may increase depending on the essential job duties of the role.
