Position Overview
The education assistant works with the director of programs and exhibits, the planetarium manager and a team of other presenters and educators to deliver excellent educational programming to schools, groups and general audiences at Ingram Planetarium and the Museum of Coastal Carolina.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, the sciences or other related field
  • Two years’ experience presenting to children and/or adults, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent public speaking skills
  • Positive attitude in working with the public, staff, and volunteers
  • Competent computer skills with proficiency in MS Office Suite (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, etc.)
  • Able to work independently and with a team
  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule including evening and weekend hours as needed
  • Limited local travel
  • Dependable transportation and driver’s license
  • Professional appearance and demeanor – uniform required

Essential Job Functions:

  • Present STEM programs and lead tours for school and other groups at the Museum of Coastal Carolina and Ingram Planetarium
  • Assist with school group coordination, including payment processing and scheduling
  • Assist with regular programming and program development at the Museum and Planetarium by presenting programs for visitors of all ages, developing and preparing materials for programs and program events and assisting with development and execution of program events
  • Engage with visitors through proper handling of touch tank animals at the Museum and by presenting programs in the Planetarium’s Dome Theater
  • Present off-site outreach programs to schools and other community groups and at community events
  • Interact with visitors, providing information about exhibits, programs, and events
  • Work at the visitor services desks or gift shops, checking in guests and executing tractions as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of and passion for astronomy, space science, the coastal environment, and environmental science
  • Experience working with and presenting to large groups
  • Theater or public speaking experience
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Experience with audio visual equipment
  • Experience working with schoolteachers or the school system

Working Conditions

Majority of work is performed in a professional office environment at the Museum or at the Planetarium in a darkened theater.
