Duties

  • As a Range Officer, you will perform the following duties:
  • Manages the Army’s Sustainable Range Program for the installation.
  • Oversees the allocation, maintenance, and development of all ranges and training lands.
  • Develops and enforces the range and training area safety program.
  • Leads long-term planning for range development and land use.
  • Manages the operational budget, including cost accounting and projections.
  • Ensures training activities comply with environmental and natural resource regulations.
  • Supervises, leads, and evaluates all personnel within the Range Division.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.
  • Term employment is subject to a one year trial period.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • This position requires the employee to use personal protective equipment provided by the employer.
  • Incumbent is is required to work in field and garrison locations during day and night and extreme weather conditions, i.e., rain, snow, and wind.
  • Incumbent may need to travel to off post training areas. Some overnight travel may be required, normally not to exceed one week in duration.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.
  • RANGE SAFETY COURSE - Incumbent must obtain or have successfully completed the Inter Service Range Safety Course (Intermediate) within 6 months of appointment date.

In order to qualify, you must meet the requirements described below. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: managing range operations, including the planning and execution of training programs, budget management, and verifying compliance with safety and environmental regulations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-12).

  • Position may be filled as a time-limited promotion, reassignment or change to lower grade not to exceed (NTE) 2 years by a current permanent Army employee. Time-limited promotions may be extended up to a maximum of five years. Time-limited reassignments and changes to lower grade may exceed five years, however return rights may be impacted. Position may be made permanent without further competition.
