Duties

  • Utilize regulatory documents and knowledge of items to determine correct DEMIL (demilitarization) codes.
  • Disassemble scrap materials, identifies metal components and sorts metals based on recycling value. Inspects all materials for contamination such as explosives, hazardous waste, medical waste, and general trash.
  • May perform warehousing duties within warehouse or in outdoor storage area as workload dictates.
  • Operate 15,000 pound or less-capacity forklifts to load, unload, stack, unstack, re-warehouse, and move bales, boxes, crates, packages, pallets, or loose items
  • Perform manual segregation of recyclable materials.

  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of occasionally.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Employee required to obtain and maintain a Forklift Operator Certification.
  • Employee required to obtain Demilitarization (DEMIL) certification within the first year and maintain certification annually.
  • Job requires heavy lifting, subject to extreme weather conditions, and requires wearing protective clothing/equipment.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Materials Examiner and Identifier ~ without more than normal supervision. Perform common material examining and identifying duties; follow procedures, sort materials by type, and operate forklifts and motor vehicles. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Assignments require prolonged working in tiring and uncomfortable positions, standing, walking, bending, stooping, and pushing and pulling material. Incumbent frequently manually lifts and carries supplies, materials, and equipment weighing up to fifty pounds for identifying and segregating items and positioning new items, cartons and cases for handling by forklift trucks.
  • Work is performed inside warehouses that may be hot, cold, damp and drafty and in outside areas, i.e., dock areas, scrap yards; or other areas exposed to varying weather conditions. Is exposed to physical hazards normally associated with scrap yard, open storage, and warehouse operations including various kinds of material handling equipment and hand and power tools. Wears safety equipment as required. Incumbent must exercise precautions to avoid injury to/from carelessness of other workers in operation of forklifts and other equipment in the work area.

Term Appointment NTE - Position may be filled as a Term Appointment NTE 4 years. Term appointments may be extended beyond of six (6) years, up to eight (8) years. With DoD approval, Term appointments may be extended beyond eight (8) years.

Current permanent Federal employees (to include permanent Army employees) applying for a Term appointment will be appointed/converted into a Term appointment with no statutory return rights back to a permanent position.
