Duties

  • Position requires knowledge of the following trade skills such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, pipefitting, refrigeration and air conditioning, trades to perform preventive maintenance and repairs of buildings and facilities.
  • Responds to maintenance repair service calls regarding malfunctioning /inoperable domestic equipment such as: HVAC, kitchen/domestic, plumbing, utility, supply and disposal systems.
  • Plans and lays out work for estimates for materials and equipment for maintenance repairs.
  • Operates a van-type truck (up to one ton) to transport tools, materials, equipment and self to work site.
  • This is a journeyman level position; works alone or with assistance with a lower graded worker.
  • CFC requires (40 CFR 82) certification for HVAC refrigeration and utility equipment maintenance and repairs of units.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. Tier 1 Investigation: obtain and maintain for the duration of employment.
  • Subject to emergency recall, as determined by the supervisor. On Call, must return to work to make repairs after work hours. Incumbent to work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • Mission essential position: must report to work in the event of inclement weather.
  • Must pass an annual physical exam.
  • Incumbent must be able to obtain and retain a current valid state or DC driver’s license. Incumbents must be able to obtain, maintain and retain a valid government vehicle operator’s license for the duration of employment.
  • CFC requires (40 CFR 82) certification for HVAC refrigeration and utility equipment maintenance and repairs of units.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties, up to 100 lbs. on occasion (water heater).
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 11.
  • You MUST be willing and able to perform Maintenance Mechanic work at Fort McNair, Washington, D.C. and at Fort Myer, VA.

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Maintenance Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. - I have the ability to perform common maintenance and construction tasks. I can operate common hand tools and measuring devises of the carpentry, electrical, plumbing, pipefitting, refrigeration and air conditioning, trades to perform preventive maintenance and repairs of buildings and facilities to perform simple maintenance tasks. CFC required (40 CFR 82) certification for HVAC refrigeration and utility equipment maintenance and repairs of units. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. such as in repairing, constructing, altering, and maintaining. Tasks including basic carpentry, plumbing, pipefitting, electrical and painting work. This includes helping a higher graded employee to repair pumps, motors, lighting ballasts, disposals and water heaters, remove electrical panels, splice wires, read wire diagrams and choosing the appropriate paint to use on a variety of surfaces CFC certification type universal as required by section 608 of the Clean Air Act, 1990 EPA mandatory technician certification.

Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires walking, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lift and carry parts and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds; occasionally handles items weighing up to 100 pounds.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside and outside are exposed to dirt, sewage, dust, grease, fumes, and refrigerant gases. Subject to injury from use of hand and power tools, and to burns, cuts, bruises and electrical shock. May be required to wear and/or use protective clothing and equipment in accordance with established health and safety regulations and SOPs. Works outside and is occasionally exposed to bad weather while loading and unloading vehicles. Subject to cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or when loading and unloading vehicles. Exposed to the possibility of serious accidents while driving in all types of traffic and weather.
