The Assistant is a strategic athletics communications professional responsible for the accurate and timely reporting of statistics, management of athletics records, and coordination of game day operations for Oberlin College Athletics. Serving as a key steward of athletics information, this role ensures the integrity, consistency, and accessibility of data across NCAA, NCAC, institutional, and public platforms.

In addition to these core responsibilities, the Assistant contributes to advancing the narrative, visibility, and public presence of Oberlin College Athletics. This role integrates storytelling with athletics communications functions — amplifying the experiences of student-athletes, coaches, and the broader campus community in ways that reflect Oberlin’s deep commitment to academic and athletic excellence.

This position supports the development and execution of a comprehensive communications strategy across multiple platforms, balancing statistical accuracy and timeliness with meaningful audience engagement. The Assistant also plays an important role in shaping and elevating the visual and digital identity of Oberlin Athletics through writing, photography, graphic design, and multimedia storytelling.

This role requires a detail-oriented and collaborative professional who values both precision and creativity, is committed to student development, and is excited to produce authentic, engaging content that reflects the distinct character of Oberlin’s campus community.

Oberlin College is an NCAA Division III institution and a member of the North Coast Athletic Conference, sponsoring 21 intercollegiate varsity sports.


Responsibilities


  • Oversee game day communications and statistical operations, including accurate and timely reporting for NCAA, NCAC, opponents, and media, while maintaining the integrity of athletics records and historical data.
  • Support and enhance event coverage, including live-streaming, broadcasting, and in-game content delivery to ensure accessible and engaging experiences.
  • Develop and execute athletics communications strategies that elevate the department’s visibility and reflect institutional values, integrating storytelling, data, and brand identity across platforms.
  • Serve as a primary content lead across platforms, writing and editing game recaps, feature stories, and long-form content while managing and enhancing the athletics website as a hub for schedules, statistics, storytelling, and community connection.
  • Lead social media and digital content efforts, creating and managing daily content that blends authentic storytelling with timely results, statistics, and audience engagement.
  • Produce visual content, including photography and graphic design, for social media, recruiting, game day promotions, and institutional initiatives, aligned with Oberlin’s brand and voice.
  • Develop and implement promotional campaigns that build community, increase attendance, and celebrate athletics within Oberlin’s academic and cultural environment.
  • Mentor and supervise student employees, providing hands-on learning opportunities across statistics, event operations, communications, and creative production.
  • Collaborate with campus partners—including Admissions, Communications, and Student Affairs—to align athletics communications with broader institutional priorities and recruitment efforts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by athletics leadership.

Marginal Job Functions

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Professional experience in athletics communications, sports media, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated expertise in photography, graphic design, and digital content creation.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Lightroom, InDesign, Premiere Pro, etc.) and other media tools.
  • Experience with platforms such as Hudl, SIDEARM Sports, PrestoSports, and NCAA Live Stats.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
