Compensation: Weekly stipend is based on the number of worship services played: $300/week for one service; add 50% of the weekly base rate per additional service. (e.g., with $300 as a weekly rate, two services = $450).
Status: Part Time/Exempt
Expected Hours/Week for Position Success: 5 ~10
Reports to:
Dir of Music; the Staff Parish Relations Committee supports the evaluation and compensation process for this role. Indirect reporting relationship to the Pastor
Position Overview:
The Oakton UMC pianist/organist is a vital part of worship and our overall mission. This role will support the music programs of the church. This includes choir ensembles, soloists and seasonal music.
The Pianist/Organist must demonstrate a commitment to the mission of the church, including that of Christian faith and work towards the objective of making OUMC a vibrant environment for the congregation and support our goal of being known externally for our music programs.

- Ability to work independently without day-to-day management and oversight, but understand the need to effectively communicate and coordinate work with other employees.
Specific Responsibilities:
- In coordination with the Director of Music and the pastor, support through playing for each worship service and other events. (It is understood that this role will have vacation time to be coordinated with the Dir. Of Music and Pastor) Examples include but are not limited to:
- o Weekly 10 AM Sunday worship
- o Sanctuary choir performance and rehearsals
- o Additional choirs as church grows (youth/children) - currently, church has children's choir that sings occasionally.
- o Special music occurring at least on a monthly basis, including soloists
- o Special occasions and services as required by the church and Christian calendar such as Lent, Holy week, Christmas season, etc.…
- o Possesses a willingness to support weddings, funerals, and other unique services as needed, and available
- Support will include:*
- o Provide musical leadership and assistance to church members and groups as they share musical gifts with the congregation; help with learning of songs as appropriate
- o Working with Music director and pastor in the musical sections of the worship plan
- o Ability to play a variety of traditional and modern musical arrangements
- o Attend regular meetings as required
- Schedule organ and piano care and maintenance in coordination with the Director of Music; secure organ with lock when not in use.
- Offer appropriate musical selections for varying events
Key Qualifications:
- Experienced and versatile pianist/organist
- Knowledge of religious music and the role of music in worship
- Understanding and experience in assessing needs, and selecting music for varying occasions
- Strong organizational skills
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and demonstrated leadership ability.
- Creative thinking and planning to align with interests of a diverse congregation
Preferred Skills:
- Previous experience working with churches
- Knowledge and understanding of the United Methodist Church; a working knowledge of scripture is strongly preferred.
Pay: $250.00 - $300.00 per week
