Reports To: Principal/Director and Supervisor of Custodial Services
Job Goal:
The job of Custodian is done for the purpose of maintaining an attractive, sanitary and safe facility for students, staff, and the public; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; and minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Arranges furnishing and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparation for meetings, classroom activities and special events.
- Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of contributing to the efficiency and effectiveness of the work unit.
- Attends in-service training (e.g., blood borne pathogens, cleaning solvents, floor care, first aid, etc.) for the purpose of receiving information on new and/or improved procedures.
- Cleans assigned school facilities (e.g. classrooms, offices, multi-purpose rooms, restrooms, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
- Evaluates situations (e.g. involving staff, students, parents, the public, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Inspects facilities for the purpose of ensuring that the site is suitable for safe operation, maintained in an attractive and clean condition and/or identifying necessary repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.
- Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g., cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuum, mops, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items required to properly maintain facilities.
- Repairs furniture and equipment as may be required (e.g. faucets, toilets, replace lights, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that items are available and in safe working condition.
- Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, alarms, graffiti, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintaining a functioning educational environment.
- Secures facilities and grounds for the purpose of minimizing property damage, equipment loss and potential liability to organization.
- Other duties as assigned.
Specific Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment and materials used to in industrial maintenance including electrical cleaning equipment, common tools, etc., and adhering to safety practices; lifting up to seventy-five pounds; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the function of the job includes: methods of industrial cleaning; preserving floors, walls, fixtures, etc., cleaning materials; and safety practices and procedures.
Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; meeting deadlines and schedules; working as part of a team; working with constant interruptions; and adapting personal daily schedule to accommodate abnormal work hours.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods (up to 8 hours per day).
- Frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, and crouching to clean floors, furniture, and fixtures.
- Ability to climb ladders and work at heights for tasks such as changing light bulbs and cleaning vents.
- Regularly lift and carry objects (e.g., trash bags, boxes of supplies, furniture).
- Ability to use hands and arms to operate cleaning tools, equipment, and supplies (e.g., mops, brooms, buffers, vacuums).
- Ability to grip and manipulate small tools for minor repairs.
- Ability to detect spills, debris, and other hazards for safety.
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, dirt, and various weather conditions when working outdoors.
- Ability to work in noisy environments with equipment such as buffers and vacuums.
- Ability to tolerate strong odors and disinfectants.
- Ability to perform repetitive motions (e.g., sweeping, mopping) throughout the workday.
- Physical stamina to complete tasks under time constraints.
- Ability to wear and work in personal protective equipment (PPE) as required (gloves, masks, goggles).
- Must be able to respond quickly in emergency situations, including evacuations or cleanup of spills.
Terms of Employment:
200 or 240 Days; Salary based on District Scale for Custodians
