Experienced Veterinary Assistant – Ophthalmology

Oakland Veterinary Referral Services (OVRS) is seeking a skilled and compassionate Veterinary Assistant to join our Ophthalmology Department. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced veterinary professional who enjoys specialized patient care, working closely with clients, and being part of a collaborative medical team.

Our ophthalmology team treats a wide variety of complex eye conditions in dogs and cats. The Veterinary Assistant will work alongside our board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist and experienced support team, assisting with appointments, diagnostic testing, treatments, procedures, and surgical patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with ophthalmology appointments, procedures, and surgical cases
  • Obtain patient histories and accurately document information in the medical record
  • Safely restrain and handle patients during examinations and diagnostic testing
  • Prepare examination rooms, supplies, medications, and specialized equipment
  • Assist with ophthalmic testing and treatments under the direction of the veterinarian or veterinary nurse
  • Prepare patients and the surgical suite for ophthalmic procedures
  • Clean, package, sterilize, and maintain surgical instruments
  • Monitor patients before and after procedures and promptly communicate any concerns
  • Review discharge instructions and medication information with clients as directed
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked work environment
  • Communicate professionally and compassionately with clients, referring veterinary hospitals, and other OVRS departments
  • Support the team wherever needed to maintain an efficient daily workflow

Qualifications

  • At least two years of veterinary hospital experience is required
  • Previous specialty, emergency, surgical, or ophthalmology experience is preferred but not required
  • Veterinary Assistant certification is preferred
  • Strong animal-handling and restraint skills
  • Familiarity with veterinary terminology, medications, and medical records
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to remain calm and effective in a busy specialty-hospital environment
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • A dependable, team-oriented approach to patient and client care
  • Willingness to learn specialized ophthalmic procedures, equipment, and terminology
