Learning Specialist: Mental Health and Exceptional Learning Services Consultation

SUMMARY:

Oakland County is seeking a dedicated and experienced professional to provide Student Support Services for Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) classrooms during the 2025-2026 school year. This part-time position (24–30 hours per week) involves delivering targeted support to preschool-aged children, particularly those with behavioral, developmental, or social-emotional challenges. The consultant will support teachers in classrooms by recommending intervention strategies, developing behavioral plans, and connecting families to appropriate resources. The role requires a strong foundation in early childhood development, inclusive practices, and trauma-informed care. Ideal candidates will possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in special education, social work, or a related field, and have experience working with young children with disabilities, families, and interdisciplinary teams. Travel throughout Oakland County is required.

POSITION DETAILS:

• PROJECT: Student Support Services for GSRP classrooms in Oakland County. 
• HOURS: Up to 8 hours a day $51.50/hour; 24- 30 hours per week; school year calendar.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor’s in education, early childhood, special education or social work required.
• Master’s Degree from an accredited school of education, social work, counseling, psychology or related field preferred.
• Knowledge of IDEA regulations, early childhood development, and inclusive teaching practices.
• Experience working with young children with disabilities.
• Knowledge and experience in trauma, toxic stress and social-emotional development and building resilience for children, families, and professionals.
• Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health Endorsement for Culturally Sensitive, Relationship Based Practice Promoting Infant Mental Health preferred. 
• Knowledge of early childhood development (birth through age 6).
• Classroom consultation experience, preferred.
• Scheduling flexibility, to meet with families and/or staff during early morning or evening times.
• Ability to work with a diverse team of professionals.
• Experience working with parents and providers.
• Knowledge of child development and family support.
• Knowledge of ASQ developmental screening tool and/or Devereux’s DECA and/or the NCPMI Pyramid Model.
• Computer skills including but not limited to Google Docs, Google Sheets and PowerPoint
• Self-motivated, yet be able to work as part of a team.
• Be comfortable with having difficult conversations with adult family members, educators, and administrators.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Ability to model and coach appropriate behavior management techniques to parents and staff. 
• Provide classroom consultations for the purpose of providing teacher support surrounding challenging behaviors. This support will be in the following ways: 
• Direct coaching of intervention techniques with children while in the classroom.
• Assistance in creating behavioral plans/behavioral tracking systems.
• Supporting regular teaching team meetings to discuss specific challenges and children.  
• Make referrals for children and their families to appropriate behavioral health services.
• Participate in regular behavior team meetings. If there is not one in place, support the program in building one and designating a program staff member to be the lead.
• Collaborate with Great Start Collaborative-Oakland care coordination and referral services for families.
• Travel throughout Oakland County required.
• Other duties as assigned.
