Part-time Adult Basic Education/GED Program Coordinator

Oakland Literacy Council
Pontiac, MI Part Time
POSTED ON 4/26/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 6/22/2026

About Oakland Literacy Council

The Oakland Literacy Council believes every adult deserves the foundational skills to obtain a family-sustaining job, manage daily life, and participate fully in civic affairs. We are the only nonprofit in Oakland County, Michigan solely dedicated to improving adult literacy and numeracy — and the work we do changes lives.

We provide free, one-on-one tutoring to adults who live, work, or go to school in Oakland County (suburban Detroit, population 1.25 million). Our trained volunteers teach reading, math, digital literacy, English as a Second Language, and GED preparation. We believe literate adults strengthen families, communities, and democracy itself.

The Role

As one of our ABE/GED Program Coordinators, you will be the heart of our learner and tutor experience. You’ll manage a caseload of adult learners and volunteer tutors, driving skill growth and goal attainment in real people on their journeys toward high school equivalency, career readiness, or self-sufficiency.

What You’ll Do

  • Actively recruit adult learners with the greatest literacy and numeracy needs in Oakland County by building community relationships and attending events in areas with high dropout rates.
  • Provide orientations to interested learners, onboard those who test eligible for our program, co-create an individualized learning plan with them, and match them with volunteer tutors.
  • Train new volunteer tutors in instructional strategies and curriculum.
  • Monitor instructional hours and outcomes to achieve state benchmarks.
  • Check in regularly with learners and tutors to encourage progress and address challenges to persistence.
  • Develop improvement plans for learners who need additional support.
  • Maintain and analyze student data in tracking systems.
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts.

What We’re Looking For

  • Solid understanding of foundational reading and math skills.
  • Comfort and fluency with productivity tools and openness to use AI tools to improve efficiency. We use Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive and SharePoint), Zoho CRM, and the Essential Ed online learning platform.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of volunteers and learners.
  • Strong interpersonal, problem-solving and organizational skills.
  • Friendly, flexible, and passionate about serving adult learners.
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks, prioritize effectively, and meet deadlines.
  • Experience in education, workforce development, literacy programs, volunteer management, training and development, or community-based nonprofits.Highly Desired
  • Valid Michigan teaching certificate with secondary endorsement (preference given to candidates with this credential).

This Job Would Be Great for You If…

  • You love working directly with people and find deep satisfaction in seeing someone reach a goal they once thought was out of reach.
  • You’re equally comfortable hosting a volunteer training session and diving into a spreadsheet to track learning hours.
  • You are committed to achieving or exceeding educational benchmarks.
  • You take the initiative to solve problems as they arise.
  • You genuinely enjoy being part of a small, collaborative team but can work independently.
  • You’re a natural connector who builds trust quickly with people from all walks of life.
  • You want a part-time role with flexibility and meaning, not just tasks to check off.
  • Schedule
  • 20–25 hours per week.
  • Most hours are on-site at our Pontiac, Michigan office. Some evening and Saturday availability is required to support learners and volunteers. Some paid holidays and time off. No health benefit
