JOB DESCRIPTION 

TITLE: Behavior Support Technician – McCarthy Teszler  

FLSA: Non-Exempt 

Location: Oakland Elementary School 

 

 

SUMMARY: 

 

The job of the Behavior Support Technician (BST) is to provide direct, one-on-one and small group support services to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities. The BST will support students and classroom teachers by providing behavioral interventions, supporting in crisis situations, implementing de-escalation strategies, and helping students improve communication, social interactions, daily living skills, and functional skills while reducing challenging behaviors. This job reports to the School Principal with training and support provided through the Office of Special Services. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Implement and monitor individual behavior intervention plans.
  • Provide one-on-one and small group behavior support in the classroom and school settings.   
  • Complete essential training related to crisis support, including Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI), along with any professional development required by the district.
  • Collaborate with teachers, related service providers and administrators to ensure consistent implementation of behavior support
  • Assist students with transitions, routines, and participation in structured activities.
  • Support classroom teachers through collecting and maintaining data on student behavior, progress, and interventions.
  • Model crisis prevention intervention techniques as well as positive behavior support that offer redirection, lower anxiety, and reduce power struggles (de-escalation).
  • Adhere to the ethical standards and established rules and regulations of Spartanburg School District Two, as well as the state of South Carolina.
  • Must be able to meet demands from several people and communicate effectively.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SKILLS?are required to perform single, non-technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: skill in applying accepted instructional methods/techniques under the direction of the assigned certified staff or administrator. 

 

KNOWLEDGE?is required to perform basic math; read and follow instructions; and understand written and oral instructions. Basic understanding of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other developmental disabilities. Understanding behavior reduction procedures, skill acquisition programs, reinforcement strategies, prompting techniques, and behavior management. Ability to accurately collect, record, and graph behavioral data. 

 

ABILITIES?are required to assist students with physical health needs, such as toileting, feeding and/or positioning the student bodily.? Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, crouch, and sit on the floor for extended periods of time. Ability to lift, carry, or assist with moving up to 50 pounds when necessary. Ability to implement approved safety procedures and crisis intervention techniques when trained. Strong active listening skills and the ability to receive and implement supervisory feedback. Demonstrates patience, empathy, compassion, and professionalism when working with individuals with diverse abilities.  Works collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

  • Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to affect the Organization’s services

 

JOB SPECIFICATIONS 

 

Education and Experience: 

  • Knowledge of autism spectrum disorder and developmental disabilities
  • Experience and/or training in behavior and de-escalation strategies.
  • High school diploma preferred
  • Higher education preferred (2-year degree or bachelor degree)
