ARS will deliver cutting-edge, scientific tools and innovative solutions for American farmers, producers, industry, and communities to support the nourishment and well-being of all people; sustain our nation’s agroecosystems and natural resources; and ensure the economic competitiveness and excellence of our agriculture. The vision of the agency is to provide global leadership in agricultural discoveries through scientific excellence.
Research Project: You will use a variety of sensor technologies including x-ray computed tomography, rgbd cameras, hyperspectral cameras, etc. mounted on a variety of imaging platforms to investigate the effects of soil health management practices on soil health metrics, crop yield, and quality under the guidance of a mentor at the Horticultural Crop Production and Genetic Improvement Research Unit in Corvallis, OR. You will collaborate with researchers to enable data collection (x-ray instruments, imaging boxes, robot mounted cameras, etc.) and high throughput image data analysis from a variety of imaging modalities in the Python programing language. Processes for high throughput image data analysis will be developed on a variety of platforms including Department of Energy and Department of Agriculture computing clusters, local computing systems, and edge computing systems. You will collaboratively generate manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication based on the results of these processes.
Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, you will:
Anticipated Appointment Start Date: January 4, 2027. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of ARS and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full time.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only.
