Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) is offering a research opportunity at the Combat Casualty Care and Operational Medicine Directorate that will include mentorship, collaboration, and exposure to multidisciplinary research aimed at advancing military medicine.


What will I be doing?


This opportunity offers a hands-on learning experience within a collaborative research environment focused on combat casualty care and operational medicine. You will gain exposure to ongoing research projects that explore the testing and evaluation of blood products, resuscitative adjuncts, and biological countermeasures for combat-related injuries, as well as studies examining the biological mechanisms underlying combat trauma, directed energy exposure, extreme environmental stressors, and toxicant exposure.

Through active involvement in these projects, you will further develop your skills in data collection, analysis, and interpretation related to toxicants, resuscitative adjuncts, and biological therapeutics. The experience includes opportunities to learn the operation and upkeep of physiological and cell culture instrumentation, apply quality assurance and quality control practices, and contribute to the development of new data collection and analysis approaches for emerging technologies. Participants will be immersed in experimental science, with opportunities to contribute to experimental design and execution while building competency in laboratory methodologies.

Learning activities may include:


  • Analyzing and visually presenting scientific data
  • Contributing to the development and refinement of laboratory standard operating procedures
  • Gaining familiarity with new instrumentation and experimental design principles
  • Developing practical skills in the use of whole-animal and cell-based research platforms
  • Participating in the preparation of scientific proposals, reports, presentations, and manuscripts
  • Observing and contributing to the research proposal development process
  • Engaging with the broader scientific community through attendance at research conferences, as appropriate

What is the anticipated start date?


NAMRU-SA is ready to make appointments immediately. Exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection and in coordination with the selected candidate. Applications are reviewed on an ongoing basis and fellowships will be filled as qualified candidates are identified.


What is the appointment length?


This appointment is a twelve-month research appointment. The participation rate will be part-time or full-time.


What are the provisions?


You will receive a stipend to be determined by NAMRU-SA. Stipends are typically based on a participant’s academic standing, discipline, experience, and research facility location. Other provisions may include the following:


  • Health Insurance Supplement (Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance through ORISE)
  • Relocation Allowance
  • Training and Travel Allowance

Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) is located on the San Antonio Military Medical Center campus, Joint Base Fort Sam Houston, Texas. NAMRU-SA serves as one of the leading research and development laboratories of the U.S. Navy under the Department of Defense and is one of eight subordinate research commands in the global network of laboratories operating under the Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC), Silver Spring, Maryland.


About ORISE


This program, administered by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU) through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and DoD. Participants do not enter an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DoD or any other office or agency. Instead, you will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE. Qualifications


The qualified candidate is a US citizen with a Doctoral degree in physiology or biology.
