Description

As an EDF intern, you may assist with research, analysis, and program support across these focus areas, gaining exposure to federal energy finance, public-private partnerships, and cross-agency collaboration.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Dominance Financing (EDF) supports high-impact energy and manufacturing initiatives that advance U.S. energy security, grid reliability, and national competitiveness. EDF works closely with private-sector partners, other federal agencies, and key stakeholders to finance projects that strengthen America’s energy foundation and support emerging technologies.

EDF’s Work Includes

  • Energy generation and grid reliability projects
  • Innovative energy technology initiatives
  • Manufacturing and advanced transportation projects
  • Tribal energy investment and partnership projects
  • CO2 transportation and infrastructure projects
  • Energy solutions that support U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies

This internship provides a unique opportunity to gain firsthand experience supporting nationally significant energy finance initiatives while developing professional skills in research, analysis, and supporting federal program operations.

Provisions

  • Stipends
    • Undergraduate students: starting at $700/week
    • Graduate students and postgraduates: starting at $750/week
  • Inbound/Outbound Travel: Up to $1,000 for participants who relocate more than fifty miles, one-way, from the assigned hosting site.
  • Other allowances: Depending on your project assignment, duration of appointment and funding availability, you may be eligible to receive an allowance for travel and training to promote the educational goals of your appointment.
Location

Washington, D.C. Virtual or onsite appointments are available.

Duration

Summer appointments are normally for 10 weeks but appointments may vary in length depending on the project assignment.

Nature of Appointment

The participant will not enter into an employee/employer relationship with ORISE, ORAU, DOE, or any other office or agency. Instead, the participant will be affiliated with ORISE for the administration of the appointment through the ORISE appointment letter and Terms of Appointment.

Qualifications

The DOE Scholars Program is open to all students and recent graduates who meet the following qualifications:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Be 18 years of age or older.
  • Meet one of the following conditions:
    • Be enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at an U.S. accredited institute of higher education.
    • Have completed an undergraduate (B.A., B.S. or equivalent) or graduate (M.S., DVM, Ph.D., MD or equivalent) degree within five years of the desired start date.
    • Be a U.S. military Veteran who has been honorably discharged and/or who has been medically discharged because of a service-connected disability and who received a college degree in an appropriate discipline within ten years of the desired start date.
    • Have completed a qualifying certificate program within one year of the desired start date are also eligible for a postgraduate appointment. The qualifying certificate program must be offered by an accredited academic institution; must require a minimum of 30 semester credit hours or the equivalent; must be in an appropriate science, technology, engineering, or math discipline; and should be related to or complement a prior degree earned (bachelor’s degree or higher).
  • Must be pursuing a degree or have a degree in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) discipline or a field that supports the DOE operations mission including but not limited to communications, management, business and law.

  • Transcripts/Academic Records - Unofficial transcripts or copies of the student academic records printed by the applicant or by academic advisors from internal institutional systems may be submitted. Transcripts/Academic Records must include name of the academic institution, name of the student, completed/in progress coursework and grades. Documents must have all social security numbers, student identification numbers, and/or dates of birth removed (blanked out, blackened out, made illegible, etc.) prior to uploading into the application system.
  • Recommendation - You are encouraged to request a recommendation from a professional who can speak to your abilities and potential for success as well as your scientific capabilities and personal characteristics.
    • Recommendation Deadline - March 30, 2026, at 11:59 PM (EST)
